Practical Poser 6

Mar 20, 2006 at 12:00 am by nickcharles

This book rocks! I am newer to Poser6, since I had used Poser4 and jumped to Poser6, bypassing Poser5. I was not that familar with the extras you get with it, like the Material Room, Face Room, etc.. This book shows you in laymens terms exactly how to do what you need to do in order to work in these areas.

There are some tutorials out there that I could not understand, as they were written for someone who has some knowledge of "how to..." before you even begin. But this book takes you step by step through what is needed to achieve what you want. It has pictures showing you the steps along with instructions on those how to's.

For example, even the littlest things like undocking the menu, and expanding it to show more then one column of items in, say, "figures." I never knew you could do that! My library is long, so this will really help save some time looking for things in each section.

I had even heard about multiple runtimes, but never could figure it out. This book shows you how!

Included are step by step instructions on how to bring your own face into the Material Room. This book makes it easier to understand exactly how to do this. It goes into what you need to do in Photoshop, PSP, or any other imaging editor for pictures, along with showing you how to bring it into the Face Room, and applying it to your figure.

There is so much in this book, that it would take pages and pages to show you all that you get with it. I am listing below the chapters in the book, note that there are tutorials within each chapter:

  • Setting up your workspace and libraries
  • Building scenes
  • Using thirdparty content
  • Using cameras
  • Mastering lights and shadows
  • Creating custom faces
  • Working with Poser hair
  • Working with Poser clothing
  • Assigning and creating material
  • Creating custom morphs
  • Creating your own image based textures
  • Modeling your own content
  • UV mapping
  • How to assign groups and materials
  • From modeler to Poser library
  • Rendering
  • Postwork and other things to consider

The accompanying Cd-Rom includes:

  • A special version of Anton Kisiel's Apollo Maximus 2005 compact
  • Hundreds of seamless and tileable textures from Audre
  • A few Poser figures from Daz
  • A selection of posable figures from e-frontier
  • Several sets of P6 materials for the material room from RDNA
  • A totally new toon figure from Sixus1 just for this book
  • Sample animation poses from pose animation by the Forge
  • UV mapper, the free classic version and a demo of the professional version for both PC and Mac
  • It also has images to go with the tutorials and color insert.

Wow! That is a lot of stuff you get with this book.

These authers took the time to explain it, so that even a beginner could understand it. I have to say this book is well worth it if you want to learn all the secrets in Poser6. I would highly recommend it to everyone!
