The top bar links are useful, and you need a logo. The site also (I assume) collects piles of cash from the ad banner. The side frame (on the right) seems less useful, (except for the Member Options, Communities, and Info, which ARE useful).

The jpeg navbar was a real embarrassment to programmers everywhere. I'm glad you're getting rid of it.

To be honest I am on a Cable modem and I don't have issue with it. The ads above it get more attention from me even though I never click on them. If they are moving and busy I scroll to hide them.

Besides being an artist at Renderosity, I am also a professional webpage designer. I designed downeastbrass.com if you care to see. I would recommend keeping the advertisements simply because in my experience the files load relatively quickly. I would definately keep the top navigation bar for convenience to old members and for introducing new members to all the parts of the community (as well as perhaps people who are newer to computers themselves). Also the design of the top navigation bar, while simplistic, appeals to me because the default color of the menu does not contrast with the default background (and becaues it is not an overly large menu).

The current nav bar graphics look pretty BUT really slows down loading of each page; cache doesnt help me any cos I open several pages at once, and it's an overall pain in the behind, and I'm on ADSL, not dialup :Why not use a single scroll down menu for "General Navigation" that includes Galleries, Tutorials, Contests, etc. to solve the issue of links looking odd in other browsers? Or change design in some way to accomodate, perhaps.. One thing I am happy about is the "My IM Archives" thing added to Members Options scrolldown. It's very much appreciated :) Anyways, good poll, thanks for asking :

This is a worthwhile poll to take. But I don't believe that you have stated the poll question very well because you don't make it clear what the issue IS that people have been complaining about (i.e. that the graphics-based navigation bar installed a few months ago has significantly slowed the page-loading time versus the old text-based navigation bar).

AndyWelder ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

The way the top navigation bar loads (very slowly!)is why I prefer to have the graphics removed. It's a very usefull item though so the links should stay.

Hubert ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

Back to simple text links please, as was the top navigation bar before. I too have frequent refresh/reload problems with those annoying 20+ mini jpgs and noticed it on multiple different configurations. That lousy/slow/reload navigation is one reason, that I spend less time at Rsity now. Thanks, Hubert

Lose the top bar, reduce the logo size and change the nav bar on the right to an expandable one as it's too long. It makes a nice change for a website to actually ask it's visitors for some input, thanks for that.

i like the graphic. don't like the TOC over on the right-hand side and think it should be on the left-hand side (isn't that where it is usually?)

Misha883 ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

OK, now I understand the question. Simple links vs the fancier ones? The fancy ones really load sloooowly. I'll change my vote to simple.

The top links bar is essential to quick navigation. The Banner ads have proven very useful to me in finding out about products that I previously did not know about. While this is advertising, it is also very useful information since this is a site that people come to, to purchase 3d resources. Many of the items on my wish list and previous purchases originated from following the links provided by the banner.

It loads ok for me on DSL but it's a real pain for those on dial-up, and completely unneccessary. Text links please.

Rich2 ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

Often I am using my work computer to browse this site during my breaks and a scantily-clad "Vicki" or "Michael" (or both) flashes by. I am quick to scroll down to hide it, lest someone looks over my shoulder & thinks I'm on a porn site. Flashy & attractive, yes. Necessary, no. Maybe a separate bar with ani-gifs instead?

elizabyte ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

People have been complaining about the graphical links (as opposed to text; this is NOT a poll to "get rid of" the site navigation!) for a couple of months. Not everyone is having problems, but plenty of people are having trouble with the images caching properly and with the site being significantly slowed.

Silverdagger ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

I'm on a cable modem, so the load time isn't that bad if I'm just opening one page at a time...but if I'm browsing the 'What's New' I tend to click-n-hide windows until I hit [next] then check the chosen images while the next page loads. With the graphic bar that tends to bog the thing down, compared to how it used to run. The links are useful and should be kept, but the graphic loading does annoy with the slow down.

redpelica ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

renderosity is looking dated - if you start changing things, I'd suggest new logo, colours and structure of links (and tone down the commercial stuff...). I use the nav bar as much as the side bar - from a design pov, you want to make it easy as possible to access what people want.

VigilAnnie ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

I have no problem with the bar the way it is. I thinks its easy to use. I hardly ever use the sidebar and have a harder time finding what I am looking for there.

Agree with Rich2 about Vicky and working !

JHoagland ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

Please keep the graphical links. When I come here, I like to play "click-a-link": I try to click a link on the side bar (or pull-down menu) before all of the little graphics have loaded. I can usually do it, too. Please don't turn them back into text links and take this fun away from me. This is meant as sarcasm, by the way- I could never understand why the "site designers" replaced text links with graphics THAT LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE THE TEXT LINKS EXCEPT THAT THEY WERE GRAPHICS!

DreamersWish ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 24 August 2004

All right I will sound very uneducated here, but here is my input. I use the graphic bar at the top 95% of the time. I use the scroll bar the rest. I agree the load time is terrible and if you change the graphic bar to a scroll down menu that is fine. For someone without a lot of computer background for these days, it was easier to find things with the graphic bar. As long as the scroll down menu is clearly listed for those who are new to the site or like me somewhat computer inept, that would be fine. As for the advertising bar, it is a fine thing, but for those who might be looking at them at work or in places that modesty is needed, it would be nice to make sure that images are shall we say modest too. I am sorry if I did not make sense. Thank you for allowing me to make my opinion.

Royalspikey ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

I hardly ever use the top link bar at all, I mostly use the member links and navigate from there. Graphically I think the site took a step backwards when it redesigned last year, and although the site remains essential, it could be improved by some modern, professional web design. Perhaps you should incorporate the main graphic nav bar into one of the plain text drop downs on the side? Add a striking typo/graphic image above each one to identify it: i.e. Members, Communities Galleries, etc... Graphic-wise, the nav bar as it is is no problems at all, but I suppose dial-up can be a pain. With a content rich site like this, viewers really should use broadband

classyladytwo ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

I personally don't like the new look it does make it a lot slower and I'm on cable with t1 speed or higher we need the links yes but think the new updated version has cause a lot of slow down for a lot of people who especially are on dial up. I do like the idea of a possible drop down whatever is decided just get rid of this monster major slow down as for the graphics I agree most of the time it does look like we're all at the nearest porn site :) thats my 2 cents worth lol laters all

niandji ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

As the links in the present form have been causing a problem to some, and bearing in mind that the link graphics currently being used have been made to look like text, why nor just use text links anyway? I vote to get rid of them and replace with text links.

hauksdottir ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

Please keep the links on top, but make them text links, not graphic ones. I'm on DSL and it is noticeably slow. Also the buzzards who use flickering banners don't get my nickles because I scroll so quickly past them that I don't see what the product might be. :grrrr:

undisclosed-designer ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

lol not much choice, hardly see ANY graphic ... and i dont quite understand what ya mean ... a modern look would be better, but thats not the point ... i suggest ya make a faster ONE page menu without having to scroll and from there ya are able to move to several locations ... so the whole context of the menu should be simplified, cause it takes too long b4 everything is loaded smile

AlteredKitty ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

Keep the links at the top but as text links only.

kansas ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

I never use it. I always use the menu in the side bar. I'm on dial-up, so getting rid of that top bar might help with speed for me.

fractalinda ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

I don't use the links bar, but the graphics that really offend me are the sleazy banner ads. I realize Renderosity needs to support itself, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to post here and enjoy so much beauty and inspiration, but some of the banner ads have become downright pornographic. I wish there were a way to at least block them.

Ardiva ( posted at 12:00AM Wed, 25 August 2004

Text links are better and faster loading. The way you have it now slows things down to a crawl until the graphics are all loaded. PS..I'm on cable.
