Description
The historic DC-3 Gooney Bird is a significant aircraft in RAAF history. The Gooney Bird is a large, friendly seabird found on certain islands in the North Pacific Ocean, clumsy on the ground but beautiful and graceful in the air. The C-47/DC-3 was thought by many WWII servicemen to share the same characteristics of these beautiful birds, and the aircraft came to be known as The Gooney Bird. This beautiful old girl has been totally restored and gives joy rides around Melbourne Australia. She is a fully certified airline aircraft, and is required to meet much higher levels of construction, certification, maintenance and pilot training than those required for smaller machines. The DC-3 has been described as the most reliable aircraft ever built.

I know about the DC3; have seen them around for years. I think I might even have flown on one when I was a kid and we went to LA for Christmas. That was the time I managed to lock myself in the ladies room and nearly freaked out. I was about 8 or 9 at the time--thanks for the trip down memory lane!!

The Douglas DC-3 is a fixed-wing propeller-driven airliner. Its speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II makes it one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. The major military version was designated the C-47 Skytrain, of which more than 10,000 were produced. Many DC-3s and converted C-47s are still used in all parts of the world thanks for sharing

I grew up watching these with my tongue hanging out. It became my fav orite aircraft but I never had the chance to ride on one, but I have flown an amazing simulator made from a real cockpit along with a few hundred thousand dollars! This is a great shot by the way!
