Description

Pinching Bug: (Pseudolucanus capreolus) Identification hints: Dark reddish brown, very shiny; femurs light honey colored. 22-40 mm long (including the mandibles). Mandibles with one tooth on inner edge in male, and twice as long as those of female. Occurs in north eastern USA. Their larvae feed in dead or decaying wood of logs and stumps. So even though they occur in woodland they will not damage your trees. Attracted by lights, sometimes can even turn up indoors. (eeeeeks!!) Note the honey coloured femurs, which are such an important identification clue. The knobs on the mandibles are also very clearly seen. Pinching bugs can in fact be handled with little fear of injury in spite of their name and fearsome appearance. (Not by me though!!!) This is my "Too-Close" up view of the male Pseudolucanus capreolus as found crawling across my basement floor today. ;-) Aren't I brave? He was approximately 2 inches long. :-o (After his photo shoot, he was quickly transported back outside where he belonged.) Don't you just hate it when they get inside? I get them sometimes in summer when the doors and windows are open a lot. He's really a beautiful bug despite the armor and pinchers. Wonderful shot maggie! :) hugs

Yep, your right...to close for comfort! Although pursing my life long dream of being a photgrapher has really helped me closer to nature and overcome many of my fears I STILL don't want them in my house! But being the nature loving person I am I really try not to kill ANYTHING and transport them outside...or shall I say, I get my husband to do it! LOL!
