A KPT5 Frax4D object using a larger version of the ruby photo at the bottom right as an environment map. Gradient & shadows in Photoshop.

Thanks for all the comment everyone. And Radolf, I always thought I was rather unquaternated. To be completely honest, the transparency and highlights simply fell that way. They are a product entirely of the environment map which is a photograph of a ruby. You can even refer to the ruby photo to identify each element. I myself was amazed when it all came together in such a stunning way.
