Description

Maman Brigitte is the Loa of Death, Cemeteries, Passion and Fertility. Like her husband Baron Samedi, she watches over the Dead and also protects the Living who call her, especially Women and Children. She is also the Mistress of Curses, Obscenity, and sexual Passion. Her Symbols are the black Rooster, Pepper, Rum, Tobacco, and the Colors Purple and Black. Anyone who wants to call on her for help must sacrifice a Rooster and Rum infused with pepper and also drink it themselves! (The Rum!) She can break Curses, but she can also curse People with Possession, Illness, and Death. She belongs to the Group of “Ghede,” walking Dead, quasi Dandies among the Loa, who celebrate with Dance and Rum at all times as if there were no Tomorrow. Which is true, because they are dead! Maman Brigitte is depicted as a red-haired Woman in provocative Clothing who dances lasciviously while enjoying peppery Rum in abundance. She has an honest but loose Tongue and likes to swear profusely, drinks heavily, so she is obviously Irish: She is the only Loa who was fully “adopted” from Christianity from poor irish Servants in the Caribbean, who were little better off than Slaves. Her role model is probably St. Brigid of Ireland, whose Predecessor may be the celtic Brigid, Goddess of fire. Maman Brigitte, the Loa of Death, whose Drinks, Manners and Curses are best avoided!

The history of this Goddess is very interesting, especially her Christian roots.

Thank You, Bushima! Yes, the Story is unusual an original! But a Riddle is: Ho could she change her "Character" that much, from a Saint to an undead Sinner!? Very strange! :)

Thank You for these kind Words! I made this bit elaborated, because it is an interesting Archetype as such - from Saint to Sinner - also as it shows how these "Shapes" walk effortlessly through Times and Cultures, changing their Characters and Names. Very strange Phenomenon!
