Description

Reflections... Atop an old science research outpost in the peaceful Himalayan mountains; the evening sun slowly sets as two long time friends reflect upon the past, and upon one another. "I... can't go back Cora. I- I just can't..." Jack said with a heavy heart. He had taken a half year leave of absence, then resigned before he was due to return to active duty. The two suffered the loss of a loved one, it was just too much for Jack to bear. "Oh, Jack..." Cora said softly, as she gently caressed the muzzle her friend's aerial steed Bonaparte, "I miss her dearly too. She was my best friend after all." "And you were my best friend... Until I chose Mara..." "You still are Jack, that's never changed. You had to have chosen one of us over the other. Don't you see? it was tearing the three of us apart going on the way we were. I just backed off a little to give the two of you some space, that's all." "It was my fault Cora..." "No it wasn't Jack. Please, quit blaming yourself. We all knew the mission, and all the risks. We all knew it was possibly going to be a one way ticket for one of us. It could've very well been a one way ticket for all of us. It wasn't even your choice, let alone your fault. Command divided the squad into two teams. It could have just as easily been me than Mara leading Team B. " "But she was right behind us... I thought she was right behind us all the way..." "She was Jack, and nobody's blaming you. You did your duty as she did hers. Nobody could have anticipated some of the countermeasures were still lurking about. They must have remained dormant on our way in. She brought up the rear to make sure nobody got left behind, while yours and Bonaparte's job was to find us a safe route out of there before the charges blew. Her mount Whisper took a crippling hit." "I could have gone back for her. I should have at least tried Cora!" Even almost two years later, the wound within was deep as it was still fresh for Jack. "I did try going back for her Jack, but it was no use! They were closing in on her." Cora was sniffling herself as grief, regret and sorrow were close to flooding out in a stream of tears. "There was too many between us, and not enough time as the clock was counting down. She sent me a brief message on the private line as she headed for a side tunnel farther back trying to draw them away so the rest of us could make it." "The squad needs you Jack. Especially after all we've been through. After all that we've lost...I ... I need you Jack. " ___________________________________ Wow, looking at the file date, this was started way back in very early 2016, and the story written back in early 2017, last render version in March of 2017... I don't think I'll be able to improve this any farther being a Carrara / Lux Render scene... Don't know if the Lux plugin even works any more. Guess this image is as good as it is, and as good as it'll ever get. Good Ol' Michael 4 and Victoria 4, talk about a blast from the past. The setting is a fantasy / steampunk alternative mix, with Dragon Riders.
