Description

Nose art is a decorative painting or design on the fuselage of an aircraft, usually on the front fuselage. While begun for practical reasons of identifying friendly units, the practice evolved to express the individuality often constrained by the uniformity of the military, to evoke memories of home and peacetime life, and as a kind of psychological protection against the stresses of war and the probability of death. The appeal, in part, came from nose art not being officially approved, even when the regulations against it were not enforced.

Because of its individual and unofficial nature, it is considered folk art, inseparable from work as well as representative of a group.  It can also be compared to sophisticated graffiti. In both cases, the artist is often anonymous, and the art itself is ephemeral. In addition, it relies on materials immediately available. Nose art is largely a military tradition, but civilian airliners operated by the Virgin Group feature "Virgin Girls" on the nose as part of their livery.

In a broad sense, the tail art of several airlines such as the Eskimo of Alaska Airlines can be called "nose art", as are the tail markings of present-day U.S. Navy squadrons. There were exceptions, including the VIII Bomber Command, 301st Bomb Group B-17F "Whizzer", which had its girl-riding-a-bomb on the dorsal fin. (Source: Wikipedia)

My personal thoughts:

I would like to thank the late Neil Wilson for the F-86 model.  Though I never knew Mr. Wilson, I understand he was a very talented and very generous artist.  He produced some of the best aircraft, military and other 3D models... most rivaling the details found in expensive commercial items.  The greatest thing about Mr.Wilson, he did this for free!  Thankfully his models still exist over on ShareCG and are still available for download.

Thank you, dear Mr. Wilson for your talent and generosity.  Rest in Peace knowing that you will always be remembered by the CG community and through your art, you'll live forever.

Wonderful image, very well done.

A great homage to a wonderful man. Though I couldn't call Neil a personal friend, we did correspond a few times. He was a very kind, generous, talented and helpful person. He is missed by many of us here at Rendo that had the privilege and honor of knowing him.

Neil was one of a kind. He'd start up a conversation with anyone at the drop of a hat if the subject was WWII aircraft or even aviation in general. He would have loved your small tribute to him and enjoyed the art work!!! Thanks. 😁

From what I've heard about him, he was (and I'm sure, still is) loved and respected by many here. My deepest regret is I didn't get a chance to know him.

Looks amazing and I'm glad you included some background info on the origin of the art. I only new a little but you provided not only a great image but an informative one as well.

Where nice work on this. The model looks happy to see how the nose art looks. Very nice tribute to him. Though I must say I was not aware of him until I read your tribute to him. Sounds like a very kind and generous person who loves building these intricate 3D aircraft models.
