Description

Broome, Western Australia, March 3rd 1942. It was not a matter of "IF." The day before, a Mavis flying boat had circled Broome's busy little airfield, unchallenged. So Broome would be attacked soon. The relevent question for the base commander was how many transports exiting the Netherlands East Indies could he refuel and get airborne and south before the Japanese raid arrived. Very few as it turned out... The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar "LT918" and the USAAF Consolidated B24A/LB30 "70" were among the Allied aircraft destroyed on the ground. I've used some artistic license- its unlikely the aircraft were parked this close together when an attack was expected and just two weeks after the big Darwin Air Raid. Assets Michael 3 and David 3 with various clothes. I modelled the slouch hat in Shade. The brim is perhaps too wide. Clearly the Dutch servicemen escaping Java hadn't packed for the desert. NEI army uniforms were apparently almost "Kermit" green in colour- all I can say is that it must have been like St Patrick's Day every day when those guys were in town.... ;-) Thanks for viewing and comments.

A fine image, well put together.. I would not worry too much about total accuracy, it can't be done really.. Unless you make all the equipment yourself.. You've done a great job! Rob

Nice series of images. I was only slightly aware of Australia's situation during WWII. Thanks to your series I've looked up more. The film "Australia" also helped dramatize a part of WWII I was not so familiar with. You've filled an instructive niche with this series. I'm sure glad the Jap attacks didn't turn into an all-out invasion. With the sparse population and vast spread of land it would have been very difficult to get them out or track them down. Keep up the good work. Images are great! As debbielove says, you can'y have 100% accuracy. :-)

You've gotten a really nice sense of depth in this piece, and I like the off-level camera level. Nice work.

Fine work and story. Nothing wrong with using artistic license when putting an image together. I think the hat looks pretty good too :)
