Description

The Texas soil holds magic. Most years, like this one, it is seen in small patches of flowers on the roadside or dotting a field. But some years, the fields and roadways erupt in a wealth of color. For you Michel, for all the love and kindness you bring to this site, and for your beautiful images of Montreal and surrounding areas, a little Texas magic. I hope you like it. Many thanks for all comments and favs of my NYC pictures. I appreciate it very much. I have more images from that trip and am soon to be adding to my files. So you'll see more from me of that most excellent city. :)

Whenever I see wildflowers along the road, or blanketing a field, I think of Ladybird Johnson. She was instrumental in starting a process which has beautified our Texas landscape today. The following is from “The Statesman” written at the time of her death.. This is just a snippet, the entire article tells much of her life and accomplishments and can be found here “…In 1965, the president told his Cabinet, "You know I love that woman, and she wants that Highway Beautification Act, and, by God, we're going to get it for her." The act, one of the first modern environmental laws, was an attempt to preserve the scenic beauty of America's highways by prohibiting construction of new billboards on scenic and rural federal-aid highways, and to require the removal of illegal billboards. She was aware some observers found her beautification campaigns frivolous, thinking her time might have been better spent on weightier matters. And in her characteristic self-deprecating manner, she downplayed her life's work in 1988 during a weekend when she accepted a Congressional Gold Medal for her work in establishing the National Wildflower Research Center in Austin. Congress' most prestigious civilian honor recognizes excellence in a range of fields, including the arts, athletics, politics, science and entertainment. "I've been crazy about this all my life," she said at the ceremony. "But I always felt slightly apologetic about it. It may seem like a lightweight proposition in a world of heavyweight problems. And it is, of course. "But I love it." …”

Wow Lucinda, this photo is one of those that really takes your breath away the moment it pops on the screen. What a truly marvelous dedi to Michel and I see that he was very moved by it. Your right about what a kind and caring soul he is and it was a pleasure to read your own personal thoughts of what a field of wildflowers means to you.

What an amazing capture of both the wild flowers and the cactus, it must have been a great year to get this resulting beauty. It looks as though it is a place of contrasts with the green trees and yet a cactus too.

Ladybird was instrumental in preserving the beauty of this state. You don't have to like her husband's politics, but you have to praise her for her dedication to one of the most beautiful states in the union. Fabulous shot.

This is the type of image that you would hang on the wall of a windowless office, put a window frame around it, sit and stare at it and daydream. It conjures up images of sunny and mild spring days and picnic baskets and being with someone special. This picture makes me sigh.

I saw Texas wildflowers in southern Texas near the Mexican border - not quite as abundant, but beautiful nonetheless!
