Description

My sister Leslie and I went to Amsterdam 30 years ago. I've been going through old slides, so when I found out, (late because I was inattentive yesterday) that yesterday was Mies birthday, I worked on a few images from our trip to Amsterdam. They are of Dam Square. In the top image is NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, and the National Monument, a white stone pillar designed by J.J.P. Oud and erected in 1956 to memorialize the victims of World War II.(wikipedia) The bottom image is of a stained glass window in Nieuwe Kerk. It is a portion of the window which depicts Willem IV awarding city shield to Amsterdam in 1342 (not the portion where Willem IV actually does this however.) Happy Belated Birthday, Mies! I hope you had a wonderful day!

What a gorgeous collage of shots here. I've been to Amsterdam only once, and I really have to go back. These image stir that urge. I love the sheer number of pigeons and the glimpses of life as it was back when these pictures were taken. I think the only thing that dates one of them is the color of the pants worn by someone exceptionally tall and skinny. I love the concept of this, the arrangement, and the walking tour of a city feeling that I get from looking at this. And on top of it all, it's a wonderful birthday dedication! Marvelous.

Oh I remember this. I was there in 1982. Everyone seemed to be taking the tram or were on bicycles. And the pigeons were the biggest and fattest I've ever seen. The Dutch were so excited to see me they named a street after me - Nieuwe Spiegel Straat. Great set of pictures, especially the window.

Amazing to see this, dear Lucinda. The slides are wonderful. You see the monument on the Dam, and so many (fat) birds (LOL). Amsterdam kids with a big ice-cream. Back into 1980 and see how it was that time, is fantastic. The window is wonderful. Oh, and I suppose you've seen a lot more of Amsterdam then me. I only was there twice, or three times; and that was for a long time ago. Thank you so much my dear friend! p.s. would it be true, that story from the 'Nieuwe Spiegelstraat'?

And looking at the previous 3 pictures, I'd guess that windo is the only surface not coated in pigeon shit! I swear there are old houses here who owe their continued existence to a solid cement coating of the stuff!

First of all Lucinda let me say this is a wonderful birthday dedi to Mies, and honestly well worth the wait for sure. This collage has such a wide variety of scenes, and each one seems to feature movement and make the entire page almost come alive. Making it complete for me was getting here after Mies saw it and getting to enjoy her comments and her thoughts behind it. Very nicely done :)

Stellar set of old travel photos expertly set in an equally stellar collage, Lucinda! Nice job of scanning the old slides. Each pic is uber cool, especially the bottom one. I suspect that I'm the only one of the commentors that hasn't been to Amsterdam, which isn't unusual....there's a lot of places I haven't been to.

I've always loved Mies' work, I just never got around to commenting. (I've not done that with a number of fine artists here...it's not personal to any of them.) But this is a beautiful montage-dedi, and I can't believe you took them from slides! Slides! I forgot about slides! It must not have been easy to turn them into jpgs---who knew about jpgs back in the days of transparencies! Anyway, they're vivid images, I love your choice of subject, all about celebration both joyous & solemn, I love the bird theme, the top square with all those birds, the two young people & that woman with the birds---amazing captures, Lucinda. And the bottom shot, that beautiful stained glass with its characteristic deep glow (from the light coming through the glass). It's a perfect ending to the group, esp with that canopy above them all, which reminds us of the air (fitting, since you showed so many birds here). I owe you more comments & will deliver, I just am doing one per gallery today to wish everyone a wonderful holiday, and you'll get a reply, too, to your wonderful letter. (As a friend used to say, "when you reply, you reply!" Lol...) But let me say here that I wish you & your family & all your loved ones a wonderful holiday, filled with love & peace. And to thank you for your amazing gallery, and for your wonderful comments both to me and to everyone else here. You are a force of light & embrace here, and it's wonderful to see it wherever I go. Have a great holiday! You'll hear from me soon...Love the montage!
