Description

I took this photo last week as I was in Freiburg-im-Breisgau (Fribourg en Brisgau in French), a beautiful German city I regularly go to (for shopping matters and taking a breather! ), founded in the 12th century, and an economically bustling place and avant-garde eco-city, though having kept a nonchalance that shows in every paved and pedestrianised street surrounding the cathedral. These statues are part of the 'fountain of fish' (Fischbrunnen) close to the cathedral. The knight treading on the dragon represented for me either Saint-Michael or Saint-George slaying the dragon. A quick look on Wikipedia confirmed that it was Saint-George, the patron saint of the city...Well, you almost know everything!...

Virginie

Yep, that's good old St. George. And I see the Blessed Mother (or else St. Ann pregnant with Mary) and probably the reigning Pope at the time. Very well done photo capture and history lesson.

I love how the background lends mystery and history with its colors and shapes yet doesn't detract from the intricate subject. Such clarity in this photograph and perfect lighting. It's fun reading about your part of the world and this is such a beautiful work of art. Gorgeous photo as usual.

Always nice to see St George up to his old tricks in a foreign country - just wish he'd come home now and again and slay a few dragons here. England needs him right now.

The tales of St. George are wonderous indeed, as are those of St. Michael. When I see these statues though, I always think .. St. George. Perhaps in this part of the world, his stories are more well known and more connected with Dragons then St. Michael. A wonderful capture, and wonderful history lesson as well. These statues are so well kept, unlike what seems to happen here, in the US, where these things don't seem to be as well appreciated.

Seeing this and the other statues beside him, I feel so lucky and honored. Very regal images and I bet in person they are almost as awesome as your dandy photo of them. Outstanding.

Great image Jean-Luc it seems that St George is held in high esteem in other countries than our own.. I live not far from the place legend has it where he slayed the Dragon
