Description

I was encouraged by one of my friends to explain my version about the name of harvesters; the long legs of these creatures twitch (making "harvesting" movements)when they are detached, thereby probably distracting the attention of the possible hunter. The mushroom Boletus (Chalciporus) piperatus contains a hot (pungent) material. Upon cooking or frying this feature disappears. Thus, indications in mushroom guides that this species can be used for flavoring is probably based on insufficient heating, or - speculation.

Well, I confess I tried the first one - some 50 years ago, so it has lapsed I hope. But I regularly see these critters with a missing leg. I keep trying the second one - the taste of the properly baked mushrooms is quite pleasant, more or less as of Suillus granulatus or the butter cap. Thanks for viewing and commenting!
