Description

Hello! Thanks for stopping in for a look. Big moment for theSea tonight. This image represents my first completely original piece. "Space Tug" depicts the General Utility Vehicle 'John Henry' operated by the Vega Mining Corporation. This is a 3/4 view from the left rear. An original design, the boxy space tugboat was modeled and UV mapped in Modo 302 using a piece of electronic hardware (a token ring to ethernet converter) that was sitting on my desk as inspiration. Hmmmm.... this could make a cool spaceship! Textures were created in Photoshop (with reference to Stonemason's texturing tutorial in 3D World #88) and final render took place in Modo. The planet backdrop was created in Vue6i - see some of my recent images for a description of how the planet was created. It was rendered as a 6000px by 3000px panorama, saved as an HDR file and imported back into Modo, where it was used as an environment light for the scene as well as the backdrop. Rendering in Modo with high quality global illumination at 1920x1037 took about five minutes on my intel quad core system and postwork consisted of a levels adjustment, border, signature and title. Yup, she's an ugly mug, a pretty simplistic model as these things go. and the scene is not too complex - but she's all mine. (Proud Papa here, eh?) For anyone considering purchasing Modo I can say that I'm really pleased with my experience with Modo as a product and Luxology as a company. I also recommend Dan Ablan's "Modo 301 Signature Courseware" DVD for the budding Modonaut. As always your comments and constuctive critque are most welcome. Many, many, thanks to all of the fellow artists and teachers who have provided the tutorials, advice, criticism and shining examples which have made my journey over the last two years possible. Pax, --michael

Amazing what a dongle can do for inspiration, better not let you near any servers or you'll be taking them apart to see what else you can make from the bits. That cat 5 cable's not being used anymore :) Hmmmm?

Big congrats, sir! Looks like a nice clean model, and the texturing is well done as well. Totally agree with you on modo. Have both of the DVD tutorials as well, though I'm still working through the first disk set (I'm on the texturing part of the mailbox). I'll be very excited to see how you progress with your modeling and rendering. You seem to have taken the next big step in your artwork.

Superb and congratulations - the model and render are second to none. Thats some fancy hardware and software you have but of course its not the tools but what you do with them and you've done great!

Amazing where inspiration can come from -^ Brings me back to my roots, where I would do the same thing (sort of) only with pencil and paper. I'm good with rough sketches of hardware and spacecraft, but don't ask me to draw a figure to save my life ^^ Brilliant creation and gratz on your next big step!
