Description

This sequence of images follows shortly after my previous one in the gallery, "The Acrobat". At one point I was surprised by what the bird was doing, so I forgot to shoot a couple of the frames, but when I realized what it was trying to accomplish, I shot the rest. I also noticed later while reviewing the pictures, that one of the reason the bird "improvised" in that way, is that the only neighbouring flower stem that could have helped support its weight was cut (you see it in the immediate foreground and touching the bird's tail in the photos). In previous photos, the Goldfinch mostly tries to hold on to multiple stems at the same time. It is remarkable how complex animal behaviour can be and their ability to learn... really interesting,i have never heard of a finch doing anything like this before. however,in nest building they must address structural problems which are more complex than this, and so i should perhaps not be surprised.
