About JETTBOY defecting......don't we have to vet him or something? How do we know he's not an enemy spy sent by DAZ or Corel to see what we're up to......(turns up the collar on his macintosh and lowers the trilby to shade his eyes) The Bryster (but don't tell anyone)

The Christmas we know today has very little to do with that of centuries ago. The giving of gifts, the sending of cards and all that did'nt begin until late in the 19th century. The Christmas tree for example in the UK is a mishmash of tradition, folklore and religeon as Alderon rightly says. In the UK there are those of us who place an fairy on top of the tree, whereas others use an Angel (is there as difference?) or a star. Go figure! Alderon doesn't mention St Nicholas though which I find surprising (No offense, Alderon) This medievil giver of gifts is however is less important today as children become less innocent at a younger age. I do work with children and find that the younger ones (6-9 years) still find Santa a magical figure but then they still beleive in the tooth-fairy? I believe that Christmas trees only came indoors in recent times (1800-onwards)simply because it was more convieniant. As for decoration, who knows? In the early part of the 20th century it was certainly a dangerous thing to do as I have seen the candles and their clip-on holders used to light the tree back then. How fire-proof is your tree? I live in Wales, UK. The countryside is very forested and yet if it wasn't for the season of goodwill many of the trees here would not be planted simply because there is still a huge market for xmas trees! My Mother always reminded me that Christmas started out as a Pagan ritual, again as Alderon mentions, having a lot to do with the winter solstice, the worhiping of other gods and nature itself. Christianity hijacked the season in an attempt to oust pagen traditions. As for attaching ribbons etc to trees - why not? I haven't heard of that one myself but It sounds fair enough to me. We still have pagan rituals as part of our everyday life. We have maypole dances, halloween, Morris Dancing, and of course Harvest Festival - now where did that come from? We have had riots around Stonehenge because the authorities didn't want pagans worshipping at summer solstice. In the end it is important to rember where traditions come from, no matter where you live or what you believe. I once heard a Rabbii say that at Christmas he was the loneliest man on the planet.... But however you see it....have a Merry Christmas. The Bryster
