April 2009 Artist of the Month - rollmops!
March 30, 2009 1:34 am
Each month the Renderosity community votes on The Renderosity Artist Of The Month [AOM] ... April's AOM is Fredi Voss [rollmops]!
We congratulate Fredi for an outstanding collection of works in the CINEMA 4D Gallery!
Who is 'rollmops', and how did you come by that username?
My name is Fredi Voss. I`m living and working as a fine artist and 3d-freelancer in Germany. Well, there is no particular story behind my nickname. I was looking for something recognizable, but in that time, I did not know that the nickname "rollmops" is used quite a few times by others traveling in the net. But anyway, after a certain period of time I got used to it and left it like that :)
How long have you been working with computer graphics?
I started with CG about 9 years ago, coming to it by accident. I worked with Photoshop before in that time, but at a certain point of time I needed something different to get my ideas "on canvas." So, I started with Terragen, used Bryce, found Vue, and then I came to Cinema 4D.
Do you have any traditional art experience?
Yes, I had a professional background from the photography-area, and later I degreed as a bachelor of fine arts.
What are you currently working on?
I have several projects on my hd, which I would like to finish. But, as a matter of fact, sometimes you have to complete commercial stuff first to get your rent paid :) Normally, it takes some time to get my renders ready, because the idea of an image needs to be developed. Sometimes I've started with a clear idea of my image, and sometimes it takes its time to come to a final conclusion.
What software/equipment do you use and why?
My main tool is Cinema 4d, besides that I have some other applications, like Vue, or several plugins for Cinema. For postwork, I'm using Photoshop. Concerning my hardware, my main Workstations are Dualcore Opteron based, multi-cpu, with Windows Xp 64. For file-serving and data backup I have several Compaq and Dell-servers, combined with scsi-arrays. For me, it is quite important to have the projects-files in a save position. Why am I working with that kind of configuration? Well, I started with PC and windows, and I did not find any reason to change that. But that is only a matter of taste. Computers are just tools.:)
I love the realism in your work. Do you have any tips you could share on achieving a realistic render?
Well, thanks :) I´m not that realistic in my images, as it appears. I´m always trying to keep a certain amount of abstraction to follow my concept. The most important thing for me is to tell a story, not just to hunt the illusion of realism. You can compare that with the concept of painting (which I used to do for many years). There is a thin line to follow to create an image in a very personal way, but in the same way you have certain rules to follow. If you want to improve your skills, you should keep your eyes open. Learn to observe. You should be able to handle your stuff, otherwise the application is working on you, and you could get lost in an ocean of technical and conceptional possibilities.
What do you think your best piece of work is and why?
Well, I'm not sure if I ever will get to "the" best piece. Maybe that would be the end of all attemps to improve ;) In every image I'm trying to get a new aspect, which I did not touch before. For that reason, I like them all, but I would not prefer one single piece.
Who, or what, inspires you, and how do you get your ideas?
I have serveral areas of inspiration, such as art, painters like Edward Hopper or Franz Gertsch, and many other artists using different media for their artwork. But the other big inspiration is live, everyday situations. The impressions you get while driving through a foreign city, or a discussion you have with other people.
How has this online community (Renderosity) enhanced your work, relationships, and learning?
The tutorials helped me a lot when I started with this. The forums are a wide knowledgebase to improve your workflow, and in the galleries you can get an impression of other poeple's point of view. Creating my tutorials was an act of giving something back to this community. I like it here :) It is a good opportunity to widen your horizon.
Do you have any parting comments, or advice for other artists?
Have fun in what you do. Try something new. Keep up your work and don´t get sad if someone does not like your image. You cannot please everybody, but in the same way you have to stay in a critical distance to your own work. Sometimes advice should be followed to get a better result ;)
We invite you to have a further look at rollmops' Renderosity Gallery while we await the interview!

Artist of the Month is highlighting a talented Renderosity artist that has been nominated by mods and admins, and voted by the community. Recognition is given to this member for their collection of works for that year.
Since we only select one AOM per month, it is not about their works for that particular month. Instead, it is about highlighting a talented artist's works for that year, and they are recognized during that month.

I think that any Artists has its talents well with him and that if it to show us little his knowledge in a glance it must do it and to show itself for appreciations. To have ideas it is well but to concretize them in a work it is better. For me all works is entitled to to post it and to receive his infinities in words of grace like .After the artist carries his smile to boiling of his assets and regenerates in another of more beautiful.
The very best C4D artist I know, so this AOM nomination has been about time! Absolutely well earned. Whoever is into C4D can learn a lot of rollmops' pieces of art.
