3D Grand Prize Halloween Winner: Maddelirium

Our 2015 Halloween contest was a success! We had loads of beautiful, creative and wonderful images, which I’m sure choosing just one was quite difficult.  But, in the end, the community chose 4 winners from each category. Therefore, I decided to interview the Grand Prize winners from each category. So, please congratulate member Maddelirium for winning Grand Prize in the 3D category.

The description of her image read, “Monsters lurk in the closets, under the bed and in very dark places. When this little girl asks mommy and daddy to check the closet or under the bed for monsters, it's just a diversion. So just remember, next time you hear in an affectionate tone " My little one is such a monster! " they may be hiding something.”

So, tell me about your image.

The minute I knew what the theme was, the idea just popped in my head. It actually wasn't the original idea. When I first rendered the image there were a lot of things added to it, but it took the focus away from the little girl. I wanted her to be the focus, so I cropped the rest out and just kept the focus on her.

How long did it take?

The render set-up took about two hours. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and setting up the props and camera angles went really quick. Thankfully the lighting was a pre-set I already had and just needed some minor adjustments to get it just right.

The postwork was done it Photoshop and took about 3 hours. I worked with the saturation and hues, sharpened things up a little and painted a little bit of the hair. I added some green highlights to the tentacles to make them a little spookier. I have to thank Poisen for creating those Tentacles. I just love working with them!

What inspired you to do it?

I wanted to create something with a twist as I am often inclined to think out of the box. I didn't want to create just a monster but more of an unlikely monster. I recently watched a movie that was an old favorite of mine, “In The Mouth of Madness.” There was an elderly lady behind the front desk of a bed and breakfast. She was so sweet and charming, but what couldn't be seen behind the counter was the monster she really was, with tentacles reaching out from her waist down. I instantly thought of that. The scariest monsters to me are the ones that aren't so obvious. The little girl looks so sweet and cute, but what she is hiding is beyond spooky.

How long have you been a member and have you participated before?

I have been a member since 2009. It took me awhile to feel confident enough to post my art. Thanks to the amazing people that a part of the Renderosity community, I got over that insecurity pretty quick.

I have participated in previous contests on Renderosity. I won the Halloween contest three years ago and also a Christmas contest a couple of years ago. I thank everyone that made that happen. There are some incredible people here at Renderosity, in the community and the staff that bring it all together.

How long have you been an artist?

I have been an artist pretty much since childhood. In fact my whole family is creative. Some people actually know me as Leonora, as it became a nickname my family started calling me many years ago, named after a passed family member that was a brilliant artist. I never knew Leonora, but seeing her work and hearing about how similar we were, I was proud to have that nickname and thoughts of her work have given me inspiration throughout the years. I was always the kid doodling on a scrap piece of paper instead of paying attention to my teacher in school. I think the only "A's" I ever received in school were in Art class. In grade 12, my art teacher caught me crying in the back of his class over a report card. I remember him sitting down with me and saying that no matter what, there is something I will always have and that's art. Creativity is part of me and I will never lose that.

I will never forget that moment. So, for over 20 years my career went to retail management, which didn't make too much sense really. I never found that outlet for my art until I discovered Poser and Renderosity. As I have mild arthritis in my drawing hand, pencil and paintbrush weren't working too well with me any longer. Poser allowed me to create with a mouse without dealing with the pain from holding a pencil for hours on end. I then started publishing my art on Renderosity and thanks to very helpful and kind people here, I started creating characters and became a vendor on Renderosity. I have now found my outlet. I said goodbye to retail management and create full time now. So a big thanks go out to Poser, Renderosity and all the incredible people that make up the Renderosity community. More than anything, thanks to the people that voted for my entry!
