2005 The Winners of the "Dawn of the Dark" are revealed

LillianH · November 1, 2005 12:25 am

We would like to thank everyone that participated in the contest. As you know from the voting, the judging was very tough indeed. In reviewing each of the images, we were truly impressed with the different creative visions and artistic expressions that came out of this contest. Each image held it's own message and we thank you for sharing it with us and the community.

Unfortunately, we have a limited number of prizes to give out. But, we think of each of you as a winner for the depth of creative power that you channeled and expressed through this experience. Blessings be to all of you.

And now...we unveil
the winners...

Great entries to the contest. I enjoyed viewing many of the dazzling images. Congrats to the winners ;)

There are two things I would like to comment on. a: In the community voting, I was trying to decide which image to vote for, but the first one I clicked on became an INSTANT VOTE, without any chance of looking at the rest. You should have had a vote button within the page. b: I entered two artworks, one for halloween, nad the other for Dawn of the Dark, because I couldn't quite figure out from everybody else'e entries which it was supposed to be, one or the other. In my opinion, I expected the winners pictures needed to relate to "Dawn of the Dark" not a Halloween picture, as it was stated in the contest rules ? Most of the artworks didn't even seem to relate to that either. When in business, and a client asks for a "Dawn of the Dark" and you do Count Dracula, or other characters in full moon light, then you would lose the contract !!! "Dawn equals a rising sun"... If I was a judge, I would look at all images relating to Dawn of the dark, to help narrow down the field first ? regards Jeff

Congrats to bodger - Arnold so deserved to win. It's no wonder that he can't face the morning - he has no guts!

Congratulations to the winners and to the judges for getting through this. I know how difficult it can be judging contests. It saddens me to read above that some people are slammed for their interpretation of the theme. I think people have to understand that words have dual meanings. Not everyone is going to interpret dawn as coming of light...what about these meanings of the word? The time each morning at which daylight first begins, A first appearance, a beginning, to become light in the morning, to appear or develop; emerge, to be perceived or understood: Realization of the danger soon dawned on us. That is the toughest part of any contest, I think. Congrats to the winners and everyone who entered!!!

I agree with Jif3D.....evidently the theme was merely a "suggestion". That wasnt made too clear. Personally I struggles with a DARK DAWN picture for naught (they sukt anyway lol) My evil clown would've been a better task for me too! No sour grapes here tho - the 1st place winner was who I voted for....fit theme like a moldy glove!!!! GREAT JOB Renderosity Team!!!!!

miharo ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 01 November 2005

It's so nice to get third place... Thanks a lot... :] All entries were so good, congrats for all winners! ...and thanks everyone who made an artwork for this contest and make a hell of a challange there...

The entries this year were all so fantastic. It must have been a hard job judging. Congrats to all the artists that placed, and a very special congrats to all the contestants for putting their very best work into it. This turned out to be a really great contest! Maybe next year I'll do more than just watch :)

JLyons ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 01 November 2005

The entries were incredible for this contest. The judges really must have had a tough time. A hearty Congratulations to all the winners on a job well done.

Congratulations to all the winners! Bodger and Saro's images were truly oustanding, as were many others that are not honoured on this page. I certainly have to agree with jif3d, here, though, I would have liked the images to have been judged more on their interpretation of the "Dawn of the Dark" theme, as it was a great one with many possibilities. I appreciate judging is very subjective and must have been a huge challenge given the high quality of the submissions. Just wanted to comment that I notice the judges tended toward more "cute" images, especially for the runners up. This is not a complaint, just an observation. All the images are lovely. Thanks everyone for sharing and to the organizers for a great contest. It was a lot of fun and I am happy with my work that came out of being a part of it.

Congratulations to all the winners. I didn't envy the judges in this contest as there were so many incredible entries. My actual favorite (and vote) was for Perry6's Cinema 4d entry but the winner and runner up were definately among my tops list. Hats off to the admins and contest coordinators also, you took what could have been a disaster because of the voting fiasco and made it into a fair and fun contest.

killerpumpkins ( posted at 12:00AM Tue, 01 November 2005

Great contest! I do agree with jif3d and his comment. Even though all the artwork was very good it should have followed the rules or at least the judging should have. Oh well. A piece I just posted in my gallery "Pumpkin Roost" would have been an excellent submission for a Dawn subject matter but was finished to late. Maybe next year. Congrats to the winners!

I wanted to let everyone know that the themes in these kinds of contests are deliberately left rather vague. Many of us in the community delight in the different ways that the same "suggested theme" can be interpreted and portrayed. The contests are not a work for commission, but instead an outlet to express our individual creativity and mastery of the tools we choose to use. The excitement of the creative process comes from having free-reign to express ourselves within a general framework. Many of us in the community spent literally hours looking at each of the images over and over again. There were several images that personally spoke to me, each for different reasons. Not all the images that were my personal favorites made it to the semi-finals or won prizes. But, none-the-less, were amazing works of art. I cannot say enough how humbled I am to be able to serve in this amazing, creative community. Catch your breathe...there is more fun and excitement on the horizon :-) Best wishes, LillianH Renderosity Marketing Manager

Well Said Lillian :) I know I wracked my brain for a long time (too long) to try and come up with something that hadn't been done to death. LOL Congratulations to all the winners and placers! There were soooo many wonderful entries!

We agree with jif3d.Sorry Lillian but, if a teacher gives a specific theme, students must respect that themeisnt it ? If the contest rule asks a specific theme ,artists must interpret this theme. If Dawn of the Dark was not important for you it was better to make a contest with a free / generic Halloween theme. First prize doesnt respect it and is entirely done with software 2D.Where is 3D rendering ? Sorry for our English ,we are from Italy.
