Renderosity has teamed up with Second Life!

We would like to introduce the Renderosity Community to a cool and interesting virtual world, where Poser users may find new and exciting ways to play with their software.
So, what is Second Life?
Second Life is a 3D digital world Time magazine called "the Matrix minus the Evil Machines." Shaped entirely by its Residents, Second Life provides robust building and scripting tools to build anything imaginable. Animate avatars to dance, box or paint with Poser (R), meet new people from around the world and even earn real $ if you so desire.

Since Second Life's launch in June 2003, Residents have built everything from little cottages in the woods to soaring towers, nightclubs to massive castles, Olde London (complete with an explorable sewer system), a Pirate Island Amusement Park with rides, planes to dogfight, fly and skydive from and hundreds of other unique activities. In Second Life, you are limited only by your imagination.

What is Linden Lab ?
Linden Lab is a privately held company established to develop an extraordinary new form of shared 3D entertainment. Through its first product, "Second Life," Linden Lab offers a truly collaborative, immersive and open-ended entertainment experience, where together people create and inhabit a virtual world of their own design.

Founder Philip Rosedale is the former CTO of RealNetworks, where he pioneered the development and deployment of streaming media technologies. Linden Lab is funded by a group of notable early stage investors including Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development, Catamount Ventures and Benchmark Capital.

Where did the idea of Second Life come from?
Second Life was the boyhood dream of founder and CEO Philip Rosedale who says, "I wanted to create a digital online world where the environment constantly evolves, driven by what users make and do." His goal with Second Life is to make sure people have the land they need and the tools they want. "We've tried to create a platform where anyone can build their own 'second life,' aside from whomever they really are in the "real world."

How can you use Poser in Second Life?
With the release of Second Life 1.4 in July 2004, Second Life introduced Custom Character Animations. For the first time, Second Life Residents were able to animate their avatars to do almost anything they could imagine. Using an open .bvh file format supported by products like Curious Labs Poser, Residents are able to create and upload animation files to Second Life endowing their avatars with distinctive moods and movements. And, in creating everything from guitar-strumming rock stars to world-class swimmers, Second Life Residents have discovered they can live out their wildest dreams in-world. To date, users have developed realistic boxing matches, recreated action sequences from major movies and put together elaborate dance routines. The most talented Animators have their hands full trading and selling their work adding to an already robust in-world economy.

Stephen B. Lewis
STEPHEN B. LEWIS: Stephen is a digital artist and animator with 12 years employment in the game industry. He has created graphics for coin-op., console, and PC games while working for companies such as Paramount Interactive, Epyx, Acclaim, and Sega. Preferring to work within a small team developing innovative products, Stephen found a home at Linden Lab where he has been working for the past 3 years. Stephen's roles and responsibilities have evolved with both the product and the company. Prior to the public release of Second Life, Stephen created the base Second Life avatar model using Zbrush and Maya, as well as hundreds of morph targets and texture maps underlying user-directed avatar customization. He also created many of the default character animations and gestures using Poser. After the product's official v.1.0 launch, Stephen's role transitioned toward the creation of some of the early content for the virtual world including buildings, vehicles, clothing, and characters while continuing to refine and extend avatar customization. As the population growth of Second Life escalated, Stephen's responsibilities transitioned yet again to focus on the design of new terrain meeting customers' ever increasing demand for more land. As the development of Second Life continues to evolve with new innovations and technologies, Stephen's role as artist will likely continue to evolve as well. Known as "Xenon Linden" within Second Life, he assumes many forms including monkey, construction worker, or vixen(depending on mood), continuing his work to help build the New World.
