Description
One day
way down
in a deep blue sea
a parrot fish
as colorful as could be
came upon the biggest bubble
he had ever seen
and being it had a
most delightful sheen
he looked through that
big bubble
and oh my
what an odd sight
he did see
bigger and stranger
than anything could possibly be
while we were looking at this
curiosity of the sea
he was as curious
looking at you and me.

another of your delightful poems which feel like they're written for children, or the children in all of us. It's part of a long tradition, going back centuries, of beautiful children's rhyme, with long and short lines, overlapping rhyme, etc. And that little 'twist' at end where something surprising happens...in this case, the parrot fish seeing us while we see him. (Nice association with the word "parrot" btw. He's parroting our looking at him.) Your painting also has a childlike glee to it---it has all your serious painting techniques, but you've painted an actual smile on him, and your colors are very festive and bold in the face in the bubble. You've been using these bubble-like orbs recently, and I know they're little reflections of the world. But here you made 3 big ones, and they become the portal through which this beautiful fish discovers us. Delightful how he moves right into one of them...and his hues change...
The orbs are very soft, like dream bubbles. (Some of your recent orbs have had a harder edge.) There's one on the far right---on top of the seaweeds: beautifully soft, like a bubble of light.
And your grasses/weeds are painterly, and in your usual undulating strokes (though they're thin, here). But on the left, you have this 'ridge' of leaves, and it makes a very strong structure over there...like it's a colony or a 'landing' of some sort. It's just fascinating how it seems suddenly so solid. And the background there is like printed wallpaper, with luminous brush dabs and lots of lights...all in varying aquas, greens and blues. A real delight, Carol. In fact, this whole image feels lighter image than some of yours: It has all the Carol energies, swirls and plunges, but lightened for your theme, poem, etc. I love these childlike pieces...they show that your vision has many sides; because, while all of them come from the same inner source, you have a very broad range in your work. (Given your extensive backgrounds, that's no surprise---but it's really sweet to see it in these recent series!) More beautiful work from you, and with your always-present magic, delicacy, and love. And this is very painterly, btw: It looks like it was made with 100% physical means. I know it was mixed; but you've achieved a very physical look nonetheless, which I love. Like your roots are coming out all over. A wonderful child-like piece.
Mark, thanks so much for your delightful comment. I have been enjoying more child-like art lately. Don't know why. I just go with my mood and see what happens. I do like that I can explore many different moods. It's been particularly fun to write short poem like stories with my art, and I'm happy you enjoyed my words and the surprise at the end. This was a fairly quick piece to create, as opposed to some of my work that is very intense and time consuming. And the colors and mood felt light and uplifting as I was creating. Seems people are always looking at fish through glass, and I sometimes wonder what the fish sees when looking back. That thought inspired the image and the prose. Thanks again for your wonderful and insightful comment. You always make my day. :o)
