Description
Patmos is a small rocky and barren island in the Aegean Sea. It is one of the northernmost islands of the Dodecanese Group off the coast of Turkey. The islands land area is 13.15 square miles (34.05 sq km). The highest point is Profitis Llias, 883-ft (269m). Approximately 2500 people live in three villages: The modern town of Skala is the islands main port and capital, medieval Chora, and the rural settlement of Kambos.
The early history of Patmos remains shadowy, for classical references are few and the area has not been the object of extensive excavations. There is scattered evidence of Mycenaean presence, and the walls of Classical date indicate the existence of a town near Skala.
The earliest remains of human settements date to the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000 BC). They consist of pottery shards from Kastelli, the most important archaeological site so far identified.
In 95 AD, during the Emperor Domitian's persecution of Christians, St. John the Theologian was banished to Patmos, where he lived until his reprieve two years later..
Patmos was virtually abandoned after the 6th century, and it reemerges in history at the end of the 11th century with the founding of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian by Hosios Christodoulos (Sources: Wikipedia, Tour guide).
The historical centre (Chora) with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Very beautiful sunrise shot interesting information thanks for sharing, Sig
Amazing capture my friend. God bless.
I've heard of this island for years...good to get a glimpse through your photography. This is the island where John the Apostle was given by God the Book of Revelation. A fascinating thing. Love the sunrise across the water.
Banished for two years to an island. Hmmmmm ... I'm trying to think of a serious downside to that. LOL! Okay, the whole survival thing might suck, but assuming one could make it through the basics, there might be some rewards. Sure looks beautiful from where I'm sitting! :)
