Description
Captured 10/23/09, around 10:30 AM, in the garden section of my local Home Depot, where I have carte blanche to photograph anything I want, as long as it's confined to that particular section.
This vivid beauty belongs to the same Arum family as the common calla lily, only this variety has a green spadix and a waxy, flaring, heart-shaped, red spathe.
Check it out full size.

Anthurium is a genus of more than 800 species found in the New World tropics from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay; species are also native to the West Indies. Even though the genus is not native to the Hawaiian Islands, in the minds of many people, Anthurium andreanum is the Hawaiian flower. This species is native to the wet forests on the western slopes of the Andes [1200 ft. (400 m) to 3900 ft (1300 m)] in southern Colombia and northern Ecuador where it grows as epiphyte. A. andreanum was discovered in Colombia in 1876 by Edouard Andrea.

Actually, I was startled when I first saw it, because I had always thought flowers like this grew only in the Land of Oz.
