Description

Only a few scenes from the Capitol Air Show 2009 event in Sacramento California. I shot about 125 photos at this show, so obviously this small montage barely shows all that happened there. Upper left: A very famous P-38 aircraft, "Glacier Girl". This plane was part of a group of six P-38 and two B-17 aircraft which were forced to make an emergency bad weather landing in Greenland in July 1942. Fifty years later a project was undertaken to recover the plane from 270 feet of covering ice, resulting in this completely restored and functional beauty. Upper right: The "Heritage Flight" consisting of a P-51 Mustang, F-86 Sabrejet and F-22 Raptor flying in perfect formation. An extensive F-22 flight demonstration was mind blowing: Controlled hover on its own tail, controlled backward flight/slip, ultra-slow and ultra-fast passes, and maneuverability I've never seen in a jet. Awesome! Lower right: The famous B-2 bomber. An interesting thing about this plane: It was nearly silent! It just suddenly appeared like an ominous black apparition - no wonder it scares the bejeebers out of the folks on the receiving end. Lower left: The famous Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team, flying their specially painted F-16 aircraft. These guys were fantastic, the formations were so tight and precise they almost appeared to be wired together. An interesting phenomona noted on supersonic fly by: You see the plane first, then a few seconds later a tremendous ROAAARRRR of the engines washes over you! (Ear plugs are definitely recommended LOL!) Center: My 11 year old son Andy at the comm/nav console of a Seahawk helicopter. He wore that same expansive smile all day - and a couple of days afterwards too LOL! He comes by it naturally: Kathy said I had the same smile all day, but it looked kinda goofy on an old fart like me LOL! There were tons of military, commercial, general aviation and antique aircraft flying and on display. Some of the piloting was breathtaking: One fellow turned off the engine on his 1930's vintage GA aircraft at 6,000 feet and did acrobat maneuvers all the way down to a perfect dead stick landing. Hope you enjoyed a little taste of the air show. If you you've never seen one in person, get out there and take one in - it's quite an experience! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Photos and text © 2009 by Larry Hodge

great picture arangement... I'm always reminded of the airshow my Mom went to here in colorado some 20 or so years ago when the thunderbirds all crashed into the ground.... My Mom was there and watched it and also worked for the airforce as a civilian records clerk... two of the pilots she ended up having to do there death records.
