Description
I don't know what drives people like me to collect buttons. From time to time I go to my button box looking for something specific. I invariably find what I'm looking for, but those occasions are few and far between.
I think I save buttons because my mother saved buttons, because my grandmother saved buttons, because my great-grandmother saved buttons. I save buttons because in 1895 there were no cars and nobody had thought of Hancock Fabrics.
There's something wonderful about going through the buttons, hearing them click, seeing the colors, the different sizes and shapes. Some have two holes, some four, some are shank. Plastic, wood, metal and leather.
I keep my buttons in a metal tin ... I think there's a law ...
If you have a button box, you know just what I'm talking about. If you don't have one, then I guess none of this will mean a thing to you.
Either way, I wish you all the joy of a button box.

Oh kewl, nice shot! This reminds me of the jar of buttons my grandmother had- as children we loved to shake it around and see what we could see next- I'm pretty sure some of them must have dated back as far as the depression or before. :) Thanks for bringing back some nice memories for me :)
So many buttons..so little material...:) my mom did this to...
I do not have a button box myself, but I've been around them. Thanks for the memories: and for posting a fine photo.
My grandmother had a button drawer and I loved just playing with them, listening to that very unique sound. What is it about buttons? And oh yeah, I have a button tin and NEVER have the button I need~~~ Wonderful foto!!
Lets see now, mmm.....which one is the odd one out. No....can't see it. Oh sorry, thought it was the November forum challenge! Excellent Tara! This could start a theme challenge as 'What do you collect?'
Hey, I need that red one slighty down right from center!!!! Cool Photo!!!
Sweet memories of the button box :) On a rainy day, take out Grandma's button box, sort and match and look at all the different buttons... Nice memories. ( and yes I have my own button tin)
Cool...
Beautyful box of bottons. Ant nice sentimental memories.;)
I DO have a button box....or three or four! They look exactly like yours and they exist for the same reasons precisely! And they are threaded in sets the same, there are probably international protocols for people like us. Thankyou for normalising this arcane habit, Tara!
Oh yes, I have a botton box too, but not anymore for collecting bottons, but for my children and gr. children, who loved to play with them. So when I was at the flee marked, I sometimes was able to buy bags with different kinds of exiting bottons LOL ! A really wonderful capture Tara :)))
I have one too, although not as many as you :o) ....but I know what you mean about running your hand through it and enjoying that tactile sensation :o)...what a cool and original post !
This is a great study of colour and form Tara, you know this might have worked with our lighting technique?
Well seen, great shot! Congrats!
Cool macro shot!! :)
beautifully these buttons! A very skillful photo!!!! I have also whole sheet in a metal box of it....
My grandmother had one too; and I have a big square tin full myself! Great idea, and wonderful capture!
I like this! The colors are wonderful. Did you know there is a male counterpart to this? Both my father and my wife's father (and our grandfathers too) saved nails, screws, nuts and bolts in coffee cans and jars. And for the same reason...they weren't going to jump in a car and race off to an Ace hardware store. Memories are made of this. Bill
I have a button box somewhere, it's been a few years since I stopped knitting but when I used to make cardigans for my nieces for school I used to buy butttons in tubes, of two dozen. With my nieces(I have thirteen) attending different schools, each having different uniforms, the buttons also where different colours. I have some loose like yours Tara, but most are sorted into tubes. Baby cardies well they had to be different again, with all sorts of sizes and some carved you know what I mean I'm sure. I also have about the same number of nephews and I used to knit their sweaters/pullovers. So I can appreciate your button box, I still cut buttons off old garments that have worn out. Excellent capture and collection. Bravo!!!!!
beautiful buttons nad colours .. excellent clarity
I have a button box but it is not tin. I love going through it and seeing the buttons because many of them remind me of why I bought them and what I sewed them on to. Mostly it was clothes for my son and daughter so it always brings back great memories.
Ever notice that no matter how many buttons you save, when you need 4 of the same of a certain color and size, you find you only have 3??? :-) Fantastic macro, Tara.
memories of hours spent playing with buttons from the button box as a child...
I remember me grandma had one and touchting the buttons was cool awesome capture, Tara May sweet smile weekend to you warm hug and love, Linda Kaye
Oh Tara - I do have a button box as I do a lot of sewing... Just never thought of taking a picture of them. What a great idea and so wonderfully executed. Great work my friend! :)
Ha ha, me too have a button box, but I doubt if there is 10 buttons in it. :) This is an interesting capture. The other day I played with some buttons in a store, they had lots of it. Nice shot and well done.
