Description
For my dear friend Schonee, who almost daily writes me words of encouragement and advice and whose works always inspire me. This is a dark character my friend, but I hope that you see her beauty.
Erishkigal, Ruler of the Underworld, welcomes Ishtar’s lover Tammuz:
“Look at my face, Tammuz. For mine is the face of death. But am I not beautiful? Is not an eternity spent here with me better than a life filled with pain, suffering and sorrow? Death is not so bad. You will have nothing more to fear, for in my domain you are under my protection. You will have no more pain, no more suffering, your circle of life is broken, and with it all your emotions are lost. You will remain with me forever, in my land, The Land of No Return.”
Where they see no light, residing in darkness,
Where they are clothed like birds, with wings for garments,
And where over the door and bolt is spread dust.
This is a V4 version of Erishkigal for my illustrated storyline telling of the mythic tale of her conflict with her sister Ishtar. Their epic battle changed the destiny of the world and the outcome affected many western religions with roots in Mesopotamian cultures. I’ll be posting Ishtar and her lover Tammuz over the next few days.
