Description
This is a view from the Aiguille du Midi (elevation 3842m - 12602-ft) over the Vallee Blanche and the Glacier du Geant. The Aiguille du Midi is part of the Mt. Blanc Massif near Chamonix, France.
This point can be reached by cable car. The first section starts at Chamonix (1035m) and crosses the forest above the tree tops to an elevation of 2317m in 8 minutes.
The second part crosses the highly spectacular seracs,crevasses, and hanging glaciers of the Pelerins Glacier along the north side of the Aiguille du Midi to an altitude of 3777m also in 8 minutes.
There are 4 different sites at this point, including various observation platforms, a cafeteria, and an ice cave. An elevator takes visitors to the 3842m level which allows a 360 degree view.
The Valle Blanche starts at the Aiguille du Midi. It is a high mountain skiing area open between December and May. It runs for 20km over the Geant Glacier and the Mer de Glace in the heart of a snow and ice environment and is not maintained, marked out, patrolled, or monitored.
It is a highly dangerous area with crevasses and seracs and it is recommended that guides are used. In addition equipment such as ARVA (instrument for seeking avalanche victims), spade, probe, harness, crampons, rope,and other appropriate items are carried.
