Subject: How do I import an obj file and keep my groups and materials unmolested?

**I have an obj in UV Mapper Pro with 5 groups, but Carrara makes either too many or too few.

Here are the groups in UVMP.**

I just want to be able to select hose1 and hose2 separately and straighten them out in the vertex modeler.  They keep getting broken down into two separate pieces each.

What settings do you use?

One the first try, the defaults.  On the second I changed it to one object per group.  Neither setting is what I need.

Can you create a simple box with the same setting so we can try for you?

Thanks.  Do you mean two simple boxes each with its own material and group?

Something that we can test here.

My experience is that if you select vertex object, one object, polymesh for material, you get a single item in the Assembly Room that upon inspection in the Vertex Room has fully selectable polygon groups as well as material zones.  I find this quite useable, as long as it is not your intent to rig the object in Carrara.

If you use the "one object per group" you get just that.  A Poser figure, for instance, will import with one Carrara object for every body part/actor.

All I want is the same groups going out of Carrara as I had when my obj came in.

**I have created two cubes named Cube and Cube_1 with shiney_metal and rusty_metal for material names.  Here are the import settings used.**

**Here it is in Carrara.  How do I find out where the groups are?**

Dan, instead of importing, try simply opening it.

**Thats what I am doing.  Here is test two where I have changed the options.  Now I have changed it to create a single polymesh.**

**And here are the test cubes in Carrara.  I still only appears to be one group.**

**Here are the test 3 import options.  I now have selected to create a polymesh per material and one object per group. **

**  It appears this as given me my groupings now.  But why did I get all the EXTRA GROUPS before?**
