Subject: Help Needed, Procdural Texture

sparrownightmare ( ) posted Sat, 22 July 2006 at 11:30 AM · edited Tue, 07 July 2026 at 5:44 PM

Hi

I am working on a project and I need some help.  I am doing a log cabin type structure on a lakeshore, however, I have not been able to come up with the decent procedural shader for the log wood grain.  I was wondering if anyone had a good procedural for logs?  If not, if anyone knew where some good free ones for C5 Pro might be found.  I am just getting into making procedurals and I am not very good at it I am afraid, so I really need to find one I can use and also use as a reference.  Thanks for any help in advance.

Here is something that might work, but I'm not sure if I can upload it. I'll try and load it as a ".txt" file and you can change it back to ".car". The way it is, each log would look the same. And it does not have knots...

I can't post the file. Tell me how to do it and I'll try. Here is what I came up with.

When you reply to the message,  there is a browse button down below the window you type in, next to a blank box that says Attach File.  Just click it, then navigate to the directory where you saved the procedural to. then double click the file name.  Thats it, the file name and path will now show in the blank box.

if you want to make a procedural texture for logs, you have to create seperate shading domains for the outer surface and for the ends. Because you need the outer surface to look like bark (not to look like wood grain), and the ends should have circular growth rings. And if you have modeled notches for the logs to nest into each other, they can also be in same shading domain as the ends.

Not a problem.  I am using simple Cylinders for the logs, with a little displacement mapping to give them a rougher look.

Here is a quick test render to show what I have so far.  The model is just about finished, I just have to do the final shading and give it some internal light sources.

Eegads I wish they raised the image size limit a bit.  Here it is again in a smaller format.

Very nice cabiin. I live in Alaska where I see cabins all the time. I grew up in a log cabin my father built, and have skinned my share of logs. The image I posted above is passable as a skinned, oiled or treated log. A real log would have knots and more variations between the deeper cuts from the draw knife and the lighter cuts. The deeper the cut, the lighter the shade. The outside bark ( not the very outside ), the second layer drys darker. I'll try and post that shader again. You just need to post a smaller resolution - should be able to have something along the size of what I posted above.

Hey, it worked! Right click on the "question mark" and save it to you computer. Change the extension to ".car" and you will have shader and file. Let me know if it will work for you.
