Howard was to travel with his friend Henry on the Titanic the last leg of a world tour. Even though Howard didn't appear for boarding, his friend took his own and his friend's luggage aboard expecting Howard to arrive last minute as usual. He did not realize that Howard had been shanghaied (kidnapped and forced into labour on a steamer heading for the Far East). Howard managed to escape in Eygpt and travelled back to Buffalo, New York. His possessions were recovered from the Titanic wreck in 1993. His friend however died with the Titanic. It was ironic that Howard, being shanghaied ended up being safe from the Titanic disaster because of it. Among his possessions were tools for coach trimming (his and his friend's trade), a Coachmaker's Journal (likely for work) and a memento in the form of a postcard from an ostrich farm. #Titanic #Exhibit
