Description
Thanks for clicking through and looking.... Well, not much is known about Synhildr, except she was a daughter of Odin and and an unknown Ljósálfar Queen. She is known to have been raised in Asgard and not Alfheim, adopted by Frigg and Odin as a daughter, or perhaps even a hostage to keep the Ljósálfar in line with Odin's demands.
She has been seen to sometimes serve as a Valkyrie and at other times as a Swanmaid. She was known for her curious nature, interested in saving animals and serving fierce judgement unto any of those that would harm animals, or hunt without any real need but pleasure. She is likened to Atalanta and Artemis, but is distinct in that she is known to also dwell amongst humans on Midgard.
The mystery, however, is that for some reason she is not written in any of Snorri Sturluson's Icelandic accounts, or other ancient sagas or Edda's. If you want to read more about her, you need to really dig into the original pre-translated books of the Saxo-Grammaticus to find a hint or two, and then follow the tantalising breadcrumb trail which leads into other primary chronicles that mention her name such as 'The Primary Chronicle of the Kyivan Rus' and old Estonian, Latvian, and Germanic tales.... Just don't blame me if you can't find the exact reference and spend the rest of your life trying to find a mention of her in those sources... just think how educated you will be at the end! ;)
There are tales of encounters with her in the ancient days of the Kyivan Rus, and again during the expansion and consolidation of the Scandinavian races, seemingly mentioned in accounts that span thousands of years from early Germanic myths to more modern Norse sagas,.... just none formally recorded by Snorri. There are several historians that theorise Snorri had an actual encounter with her, and in whatever aftermath, vowed to never mention her name in his sagas and Eddas. Based on the lack of her name in his accounts, there may be substance to this theory?
She shouldn't be confused with the Norse Goddess Syn, they are very different beings.
This image attempts to convey her, on a day before going off to hunt some game hunters, with her faithful handmaiden, Gurte.

PS: Honestly, please don't spend your life searching Saxo-Grammaticus or the Primary Chronicles of ancient Europe and the Middle East for her, unless you have a wish to become a scholar and bookworm!
