Description
Nick grew up on the planet Bluehaven, but he moved to Vindora in 3499 because he wanted to live some place where he could go outside and breathe the air. He found a job and shortly thereafter met the most beautiful girl in the universe. To Nick's complete shock, she was as interested in him as he was in her.
Laura was a farm girl, born and raised on Vindora. The last thing she expected was falling for a handsome off-worlder who knew nothing about agriculture. Thankfully, Nick was willing to learn. Getting ready to go independent took longer than either of them had expected, but in 3510 Nick and Laura, now accompanied by their son Zack, moved to a homestead in the Vindora outback.
It's been hard work, and they won't be able to raise a full crop until the municipal canal is finished, which won't be for a least another standard year. But they've got a large truck garden to supply fresh vegetables, a dozen assorted fruit trees, and a small herd of shamels (a grazing animal first domesticated on Sigma Draconis V) to provide wool and meat. To help make ends meet while they're waiting for the canal to be completed, Nick sometimes takes jobs driving heavy vehicles for a local mineral exploration company. Returning home after a long, tiring expedition into the desert is always an occasion for joy.

This is a really great scene - I love the view from the cab as he approaches the homestead. It reminds me a lot of the Skywalker homestead on Tatooine. The child and dog running to meet him is a delightful touch!
