Description
This is something new for me, the surface terrain for this scene was generated from a series of photos I took at the top of Chilnualna Falls in Yosemite. I learned getting a good set of photos takes practice and I made some mistakes. Fortunately, all was not lost and several photo sets worked out, with this one giving the best results.
I used the program Photoscan by AgiSoft to create the meshes (there is also free software that will do the same thing). Then I used another program called XNormal (it's free) to transfer the details from the ultra high resolution mesh onto a normal map. In this scene you see a lower res mesh and a normal map.
In case you are wondering I don't have a drone :) The rocks are only 6 feet long and the mesh is replicated 4 times to cover a larger area.
The name Chilnualna (pronounced Chilnoo-al-na) is a Native American Piute Indian name, its meaning has probably been lost to time, but several sources say the old timers claimed its meaning is "leaping waters” or "many rocks". Either interpretation would describe this interesting terrain.
