Description
I am still sitting in the same Kneipe on Turmstrasse in Moabit, finished my Bockwurst and working on finishing my beer. I am scanning the place, checking out the clientele. The 'Stammkunden', the regulars, are all sitting or standing on the bar, its their time to socialize. They are talking about local issues, local politics, none of which I know anything about or cared about. I realize that after having left more than 50 years ago, I have nothing in common with them anymore. But we used to do the same in the late 1950's.
So after my eyes roamed over the crowd I started to check out anything else that may be of interest while I worked on finishing my beer. After all I stopped in this place to use the restroom, had to buy the beer to do so, and was too cheap to not finish it. There were old enamel beer signs and this, a sign for the '6 Tagerennen'.
'6 Tagerennen', or Six-Day Racing, is a track cycling race that lasts 6 days. Six-day races started in Britain and spread to many countries in the world. It is a team sport, usually two riders per team that ride on an indoor track, a Velodrome, for six days continuously. The team that completes the most laps after six days is the winner.
The sport was very popular in the 1930's and in Berlin in the 1950's it was always a major event. It is still performed here in Berlin, with this year. 2016, being the 105th anniversary.
These signs are for sale and can be ordered via the internet, but they cost a little more than I was willing to spend.

A very interesting narrative, Sig! We can rarely go back in our lives. I sometimes think I only imagined that I was a teacher for all those years!
Excellent, I like cycling too, the cool image and your backround story !!!
In spite of going in just to use the restroom it seems to have been a nostalgic and introspective time for you. I find it can be enjoyable to travel down memory lane for a bit and then be on my way again. I hope you found the rest stop enjoyable.
Well, for one thing I realized that I am getting older. Even if those Stammkunden were genuine Berliners, they hadn't been around when I grew up there. The other thing in Berlin now, and in many other European locations, there is so much in-migration, that these people may have been born locally, but the parents came from somewhere else.
cool
Shining.
nice story behind this capture. i hope you enjoyed your beer
interesting and informative narrative and great capture
Great shot !
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
I hope that one day I could find my memory lane as introspective and pleasant as you seem to have found yours. The bicycle poster is really neat!
