Description
Sitting in a 'Kneipe' on Turmstrasse in Moabit, Berlin and having a beer and a Bockwurst mit Broetchen. A 'Kneipe' is a bar that serves beer and spirits. In the '50s', when I lived in Berlin, Kneipen were usually located on corners. Workmen at that time still pushed carts with goods around, just like they did in the garment district in New York City, and generally in the middle of the day they stopped at a Kneipe and took a break and had a beer and a 'Schnapps' and then went on their way. In the evenings many workers stopped in a Kneipe to have a couple of beers before they headed home. We did. There is no entertainment and drinking and smoking was the norm.
In this new Berlin, politically correct. most Kneipen no longer allowed smoking. The reason I went in there was to use the WC. It irritated me to no end that public toilets are coin-operated and cost 50 cents to use, no matter what ones business. So rather than spending the 50 cents on a coin-operated public toilet, I went into a Kneipe and had a beer befor I could exercise the privilege of using their WC. And there is no tolerance of letting one use the WC without buying a beer. When a stranger enters the Kneipe the bartender watches like a pitbull, and if one heads for the restroom before buying a beer or Schnapps, he sounds the alarm and makes it clear to the miscreant that there is NO free restroom use in his bar. Apparently tolerance is not in the German vocabulary.
So here I am sitting, drinking a beer I didn't really feel like having just so I could use the bathroom, but I enjoyed the Bockwurst mit Broetchen.
Looking out the window at the cold and dreary sky it struck me at how warm the lights in the bar were. Schultheiss is one of the two major beers in Berlin, the other is Berliner Kindl and I was most likely drinking a Schultheiss.

Years ago I used to enjoy a beer and a smoke in Kneipen in Vienna, but I suppose they, like the rest of the world, have gone smokefree. This no smoking rule has killed off many traditional English pubs and clubs. I don't smoke nowadays, but I think the rules should allow a special room just for the smokers.
Na dann PROST!
Great capture !!!
beautiful shot !
Weird, you're not allowed to smoke, where you are allowed to drink yourself to death. Although have been growing up in Berlin, I never liked those typical Kneipen. Nothing "gemütlich" (cozy) about them. Dirty and full of shitheaded redneck Idiots. I bet it smells worse without zigarette smoke there. I dont see many of those real original Kneipen these days anymore. There are a lot of tourist-Kneipen in Berlin nowadays, that are nice.
I like the warmth of this shot & the way that interior warmth contrasts with what looks like a cold, dreary day outside. Not much of a beer drinker myself (I have one large ritual beer when I play poker every two weeks & every once in a while when we eat out, though I usually opt for wine) & I'm happy to not have to put up with smoke in public places, but restrooms should be free to anyone who needs them...
the contrast is very nice. I love the warm light vs the grey skies
Nice shot. Your description reminds me of neighborhood bars one finds in almost any American big city, except without the wurst.
I love the way you caught the dilapidated remains of Christmas decor on the warm lamp. It seems somehow fitting.
I love the lamp shape. Well, your story about the use of the toilet is funny but it's the same in the others European countries. I also understand the bartender : everybody would come everyday without giving anything for the use of the toilet. Ordering a coffee or a beer is the least someone can do :-)
Stunning capture my friend. God bless.
Interesting, great capture!
Exactly the word I thought. Warm. Especially the dark murky sky gives a great ambiance! I'd love to go to one of these places and have a Schultheiss! :D Great shot!
beautiful
Nice picture.
so toilettes are built for people to dink beer...........same thing is in Italy.A toilette is not a "service"
