Description
These rice fields are in the Mekong Delta near Chau Doc and the Cambodian border. View is from Sam Mountain and the diagonal line from the lower right to the upper left side in the middle of the picture indicates the border between Vietnam and Cambodia. The Mekong Delta is a major rice growing region and falls under the influence of the Southwest monsoon resulting in two main seasons hot and dry, while the other major rice growing region in the Red River Delta in the north falls under the Northeast monsoon, with chilly winters.
About 30 km north of Danang is the Hai Van Pass, a natural geographic and climatic barrier, which influences Vietnamese life. While in the delta the rice was just planted, about a week later near Hue, north of the Hai Van Pass harvested rice was spread out on plastic sheets across highways for drying. Further north near Hanoi and Halong Bay the rice hadn't been harvested yet.
