Description
A Hungarian soldier standing at his post outside the Parliament in Budapest. Many of the soldiers we saw in Budapest were outfitted this way. The dark sunglasses & the rifle gave him a kind of ominous & perhaps somewhat fascist look, which is why I gave him the nickname "Captain Sinister". They seemed pretty oblivious to the tourists taking photos of them, but I got the distinct impression that any unusual behavior would not be tolerated...

looking at the bayonet at the end of the rifle would give any right-thinking person pause before doing anything foolish.
wonderful capture
well captured, I agree with your info
What a boring job!
Neat capture....
Outstanding,
If somebody weared sunglass he is fascist automatically? Man, what is this false & bad mood creation.? It's shame.
No, I don't consider all people who wear sunglasses fascists (I wear them myself occasionally). What I described was a feeling I got that was based on a combination of factors. My feeling may or may not have been accurate, but that is what I felt...
Nice shot! Browsing your gallery, you really take some most incredible photos. 5 plus!
The sunglasses seem wrong, somehow, for a soldier on duty. As does that blue adornment on such a plain uniform. The bayonet looks like it's there for a purpose though - "they don't like it up 'em ..." Nice capture!
You captured your feeling well with this shot. The combination does give a somewhat sinister feeling to it. Maybe these particular sunglasses are really the kind with a computer in them that tells the guard everything about everyone they see.....gulp! :)
I agree, the pose and the sunglasses (as well as that big rifle!) make me want to walk by very quietly and not disturb him at all. Super capture!
The sunglasses could be practical: does the soldier face the sun low on the horizon and require eye protection? Then it is a good way to keep people guessing which way he is looking if someone is planning on doing something stupid (Naw, say it isn't so! Tourists do something stupid?).
Regardless, an interesting little detail and a neat photo.
