Description
This cozy batch of buildings next to Mammoth Hot Springs constitutes Yellowstone Park Headquarters, Yellowstone Hotel, and the former Fort Yellowstone (1886-1918).
Yellowstone became the first National Park in the USA in 1872. However, there was no effective way to bring law and order to this huge area (3,468 square miles) until the US Army sent a company of cavalry to establish a permanent post there in 1886.
The red roofed buildings on the right among the trees are the structures of Fort Yellowstone, turned over to the newly created National Park Service in 1918.

P.S. That is not snow in the foreground. I am standing on a boardwalk that oversees the top terrace of Mammoth Hot Springs and the white stuff is actually limestone deposits forced to the surface by thermal activity deep below the surface.
This is a fave for me Bill, I think it's a super shot and to think that one day the area might create a gigantic explosion and threaten all life on Earth !
Absolutely wonderful image !!!!!!
Such a lot to see! I have just had a virtual wander around.
Wonderful capture my friend. God bless.

Great shot. Law and order will be restored if that supervolcano ever goes off!
Here I can see how big the world is :-) A wonderful shot this is. !!!
Such a neat view! I like the way the buildings just nestle into the valley there. Lovely! This was worth you hiking down to wherever you went to get this shot. :)
Fascinating surroundings Bill. I adore your landscapes.
Forward, YO! in this magnificent pano of the buildings of old Yellowstone Park, neatly ensconced within what could pass as a crater on the moon, Bill.
