Description
Taken during a short hike several days ago in a volcanic lava field at Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco, Idaho.
Best estimates of the age of this flow is 2,100 years. This entire area is surrounded with large cinder cones that have been dormant for centuries. However volcanologists believe that they could once again become active at sometime during the next 1,000 years. We got out of there fast:-)

this is wonderful shot
Very cool view of some incredibly serious stuff
I love this pov, and am impressed that you found a shot where that tree looks like something! :) Excellent image, hon. It gives a good feel for the place.
A great shot and illustration Bill - I think I would hot foot it out too !!
This is really interesting, showing stuff that manages to grow there, and with the mountains a safe distance away!
What a fabulous place... Marvelous capture!!!
Great close up, Bill. Difficult to hike through, I imagine, but oh the fascinating details!
Isn't that where the supposed "supervolcano" lies in wait underground to decimate the whole continent? I'm guessing if that's the case getting out of there wouldn't be enough should it decide to erupt! Wonderful shot of this lava flow!
Very nice capture Bill.
Verry impressive landscape, good work!
WOW! It looks like burned wood, this Lava. A fantastic shot and reflections.
I am amazed how things will still grow, great capture. xx
What an amazing place. I googled it, and it does indeed look like the moon!
wonderful shot
I seen it on the map but did not go there my last trip. I past many lava fields in Nevada earlier this month
Stunning capture Bill. God bless.
Looks exactly like a stack of cold charcoal embers after a barbeque, Bill. Great ambiance in this photograph.
Wonderful capture! as was said in a movie - Life finds a way!
A 1,000 years you say? Well, there goes my plans for the weekend. I really like the POV on this with the mountains in the distance. Great DOF.
