Garden of One Thousand Buddhas
North of Missoula, Montana
I've wanted to visit this place ever since I heard about it a few years ago. In the past, we've had to miss it due to scheduling, or because it was too hot a day to leave the dog in the car. I'm sort of glad we had to wait though, because it's been recently completed, and seeing it in its entirety was a wonderful experience!
It's impossible to show the whole setting, but just imagine a flat valley surrounded by mountains on every side. Silence is requested there, and I thoroughly enjoyed walking around the mandala alone, seeing the changing view with the endless row of stupas against the mountain backdrop, and the buddhas, large and small. There are prayer flags everywhere, and a prayer wheel dings a bell at regular intervals.
At the far end of the main axis is a pond with this lovely Kwan Yin occupying the center spot.
We spent a little over an hour there, and only saw three other people in the park.

A beautiful reflective shot. I've never heard of this place - are there really a thousand buddhas? Did you count them to make sure? We passed through Missoula last year - if I had known about this, I definitely would have visited. I hope you have other photos of this place to post...

A beautiful photo hon. The alabaster-like statue, the tall ornamental grasses, the reflected blue sky and calm water...all draw me right into the middle of your composition.
Now I know more than I did a few days ago because I've never experienced a Buddha Garden elsewhere. Did I get a spiritual experience out of this place? Yes I did. A place I can be by myself. A place without distractions. A place without time constraints. No dogs. No idle talking. No smoking. A posted no-hate zone. I may have experienced something similar an ancient cathedral in Germany, strolling through giant redwoods in Humboldt County, CA or sitting alone a garden somewhere.
But we got all of this rolled into one the other day. Thanks for keeping this on our must see list.
This must be an amazing experience for you, my friend. I try to imagine as you describe it so well. And I love silence, it's become seldom in our world; and I imagine the atmosphere there, it must have been wonderful.
