Description
Taken from the same location on the marina as my previous post, I used my camera at maximum zoom (60x, 1200mm equivalent) to get this shot of Alcatraz. Though I lived in the SF Bay Area for over 30 years, I never actually took the boat tour out to Alcatraz. It's actually not that uncommon for residents of cities with famous attractions (especially if they're located on islands) to have never visited them - many New Yorkers have never visited the Statue Of Liberty...
Please zoom.

Nicely captured and very true about your statement!
me neither
It is an imposing edifice. I'd love to do the tour but it's quite a trip from the UK. :-) It's true what you say about locals - that's why I've always been grateful for photography - it makes me look at what is around me.
Like the quality of this photo. It has the look of an old linen postcard (I used to collect them). Agreed on locals and sightseeing. Having lived 20 miles east of NYC for my first 17 years, we'd only visit the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty when we had out-of-town guests to show around.
Yes, I agree with you. That's why I like having a guest or two to take to places !
I've been to the Space Needle once in the last 35 years or so, and that was when Marilyn (beachzz) was up for a visit and we went up to take pictures. :P We've visited a couple of old prisons, the Idaho State Penitentiary being the most impactful, and I can tell you it's a fascinating experience, but not one to be taken lightly. Unless you're totally oblivious to the energy of a place (and I know you aren't), visiting an old prison takes a bit of recovery time.
I LOVE 'touristy' things! I even do them all here in Oz!
As a native New Yorker, I finally got to visit the Statue of Liberty several years ago. Never been to CA and would love to visit the old prison.
I rarely get to local attractions either, but I did do the Alcatraz tour after I moved from the Bay area and came back for a visit. It was very interesting, and a nice boat ride to get there. It can be a challenging hike around the island, lots of steep paths if you're not prepared for them!
for all the years that I was stationed there, I never went there - though I watched the Mythbusters take on the escape. Great capture
Both this and the beach photo are wonderful. I thought it was Alcatraz when I saw the beach foto although I have never lived in SF only visited. I did take a boat tour of the harbor, but never toured the island.
Isn't that curious.... like others, things around us that tourists clamor to see seem ordinary and unimpressive.... we only miss them once we are away from them. I agree with Bill.... it looks like a postcard. I imagine it would be a bit disconcerting to visit there. Great shot.
I never got to spend time at this "luxury hotel", though San Francisco's been home town USA since mid 1969s. Primarily due to the boat ride and time the visit takes. Nice photo of the place. Keep it up! :-)
