Description
Taken at the Newport Aquarium. Horseshoe crabs are not truly crabs at all - they aren't crustaceans, but are arthropods more closely related to spiders. They are also very ancient creatures that predate dinosaurs by over 200 million years.
Not a great photo - it's pretty fuzzy, but I thought it had a kind of surreal quality to it & I tried to postwork it as well as I could to bring out that kind of strange, alien feel to it. This will be the last of my photos from a trip to the Oregon coast I took a few years ago (thanks for all your comments) - onto something different next...

They are odd creatures! A shame really to keep them in aquariums, but I like the photo.

THANKS! It's a joy and pleasure for me to see a horse shoe crab again! I took one home every time we had been to the beach near New York when I was a child back in the 1950s. Sadly none of my little friends survived tap water. The big ones frightened me - very unpleasant to step on with all those barbs on their upper surfaces. Fascinating creatures! I haven't seen one since 1962, having lived in places inland. Keep up the good work! :-)
