Joshua Tree National Park
Southeastern California
October, 2013
We came into the park from the south on the Cottonwood Springs - Pinto Basin Road. From that direction there's a lot of wide-open scenery before you get to the famous Joshua trees and boulders.
If memory serves, these small palms are the only palm native to that area.
Zoom is worth it ...

You could have called this "Quintessential Desert Scene" - because it is. Some people find the desert barren & sterile, but I love the openness of it, the wide expanses & the unique plant & animal life. This photo captures it perfectly...
Beautifully composed and presented. As I view this scene my mind takes me back to 1962-63 when I was a 2nd Lt in a Tank Battalion stationed in the Mojave Desert in Southern California. At that time we could train anywhere we wanted in the vast deserts on government land. Little did I know of ecology at that time. Times have changed. These lands are no longer open to motorized vehicles...especially tanks...:-)
