Description
We had a cold spell last night and we found a recently hatched Scarlet King Snake trying to stay warm on our walkway. We scooped it up and s/he spent the night in a paper towel lined shoebox. They are a nonvenomous species of King Snakes found in the southeastern United States. They are mostly night hunters and are among the smallest of all King Snakes, usually ranging from 16 to 20 inches (40 to 50 cm) long at maturity. This new hatchlings was about 6 inches (15 cm) long and not aggressive at all. Easy to tell which photo was taken in the shoebox and the other was taken outside on the walkway. The sun was on the dead leaves under the hedge so that is where we put him. It does look like the deadly venomous Coral Snake but it was not.
Red touch yellow, it can kill a fellow (Coral Snake)
Red touch black, it is a friend of Jack (King Snake)
Adults King Snakes are expert climbers and swimmers and eat lizards, frogs and birds eggs. This little fellow must be limited to insects. S/he was only about as big as a wood pencil. Something different for my 1,500th posting.
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated.

What a beautiful little creature! I'm glad you kept it warm overnight.
Cool photo.
Most excellent captures!
Great find and photo, Dana! I'm glad you take care for her, snakes are a misunderstood species
congrats on 1500 images, Dana. looking forward to 1500+ more. superb on enlarge, but can't stand snakes, enjoy them on pic. glad it was not a coral variety.
Snakes are fascinating but ..... not really my case. I have great respect for them and that's putting it mildly ..... FEAR! Because my skills are equal to zero. Thanks for the info. But she has a very nice color.
What a fantastik #1500. And a great story and info. Thanks for sharing.
Such a beautiful creature! Thankyou for caring for it and showing us !
Congrats on your 1500th Dana and these are great shots of this little feller. Glad you know the difference!!
Great capture from the colors I would have assumed it was deadly!
I do not like snakes because I do not know how to recognize them, that one would have scared me, but he is superb with its splendid colors! Excellent capture, Dana! Congratulations for your 1500th image!
This snake scares me, but you say it is not venomous ! Two superb shots of it, Dana ! Congrats for your 1500th !
Not knowing about them I would have presumed it to be dangerous with that vivid color. I particularly like the upper shot, almost like posed. And congratulations on reaching 1500! That represents a lot of work and pleasure for those of us watching your every move.
Wayne, the snake was backed up against a step and I am guessing that this is a defensive position. S/he was to fast to allow me to pose him!
A friend of mine has a Milk snake which to my untrained eye looks similar. I've even gotten to handle it as it is harmless too, unlike 100% of the native snakes around here....which will KILL ya as soon as look at ya! lol
Ce sont vraiment de superbes image non ami et un instant j'ai cru que c'etait le serpent corail. These are really great image, my friend, and a moment I thought it was the coral snake.
O.K. it's safe but it sure doesn't look that way, my cat when she was a kitten kept bringing red bellied black snakes into the kitchen for our approval...and are extremely poisonous ! ~Cheers~

Snakes can be such fascinating creatures. I seriously would be tempted to keep this pretty little critter as a pet, considering that it's so small and non-venomous. And so good-looking. :)
He sure is a pretty snake this is one i do not see around here awesome shot.
Wow, that is one awesomely cool snake capture Dana.
That's great that you did that Dana, as you know I am a snake fan and keep a rat snake and have 20 Royal pythons at home :) we have a similar saying, "Red on yellow or white, kill a fellow or might, Red on black venom lack" :) Great shots and some good info too
impressive and wonderful colored spezies! interesting to read about her! look, the ground in the first images fits to her skin! ;o)
not to be met on a dark night i'm thinking Dana. Great shot

Great capture of this KIng Snake Dana!! I've seen the venomous coral snake and this looks just like it. How do You tell the difference?
