Description
Last time I alluded to some devious defensives of the Papal Palace at Avignon beyond the arrow portals. These are them.
Looking up along the outer wall of the palace you will see that there is in fact a false wall along the arches. Between the two walls there is a grate; this is where defenders could have stood. Safely protected by the outer wall they could rain down a stream of stones, boiling water and hot oils on any attackers who had managed to get to the walls.
You will see that the windows on the wall are covered by an overhang which would have protected any defenders from the slop being applied by their comrades above onto the attackers below.
Can you imagine being huddled against these over imposing walls, having just fought your way through a hail of arrows and bolts and then suddenly being dumped on by buckets of boiling pitch with no way to counter attack?
The residents of the palace may have been popes but they were no saints.

Son of a pitch! Wicked and cool POV Thanks for this image and description
Crafty indeed. An excellent defense construction. Awesome photo too. One really can really get the sense of despair a warrior might have as he looks up to see death raining down.
Somehow, I had a feeling boiling oil would be involved. Very effective extreme POV - hope you didn't get a stiff neck out of it...
What a cool capture indeed, Roxie. They truly had a first rate defense setup here.
What a shot. Boggling the eyes at first. Wow!
Great shot, love the POV!
cool pov that puts a wrench in the neck, very well captured Rixy.
great POV - excellent
Fantastic insight
I've seen defensive walls like these before, but never with this perspective. Excellent.
Wonderful Image. Great work!
Great POV and info!
This is an utterly disorienting view – love it!!! The capture has great detail along the entire length of the wall – beautifully done! An amazing and menacing structure without a doubt.
Amazing engineering here. Thnks for posting this.
Time to use the levetation spell... ;)
Somehow I feel like a prisoner. The freedom so unattainable!
okay---WOW! Now that is one cool POV!!!
superb and dizzying angle
Cool perspective and shot my friend!!!
It is chilling to consider all the ways that humans conceived to kill their enemy. But then it was kill or be killed many times. What a shot, and how ingenious to protect the windows against the oil or pitch!
Yeah, that would definitely ruin one's day...... What a shot, Roxy - a great angle here! I just hope you didn't fall backwards when shooting this! I remember many years ago I tried a similar shot of the vehicle assembly building at Cape Canaveral, and I dang near ended up on my butt! LOL
Great shot/perspective :O-)
That's huge!
amazing point of view... great capture
