Description

This is the interior of the Neolithic hut at the Livelet Archeopark. The area is organized in order to accomodate small groups of visitors on the right, listening to the explanations of the guide near the artefact on the left. Simon the Elder is one of the guides here, together with Simon the New and a woman archaeologist. There was no pole there to support the roof, but the safety regulations prompted the architects to put it all the same. The result is that the interior is more apt to satisfy the managers' as well as the visitors' needs than those of a supposed Neolithic family. This is typical of museums in general, and the Archeopark is a museum in the open. Once we understand that, we can see that the fireplace was not in the middle of the hut: actually the hut was often divided in a living room and a sleeping quartier, in this case reached by climbing the ladder. The fireplace was often near a wall, in the cooking area and the pots, ladles, bowls, etc. on the shelves, while the other half was devoted to spinning and weaving, especially in winter. Otherwise most activities were outside the hut, whose windows were very small to keep it warm. This means that the hut was probably a bit full of smoke, especially because there was no chimney. Thanks for your kind comments.

Sandra, first of all let me say how excited I was to see you post this interior photo of the hut. I was truly fascinated by all the details you captured here, especially the little fireplace. Thank you so much for your detailed explanation of the interior as well as how it was originally set up. I would love to visit a museum like this in person

I would wonder if they didn't suffer from dying from the smoke with no chimney to ventilate it! An excellent photo and read, Sandra! Most excellent!
