See the coffee pot?
When I posted the first picture in this series, A Little Off the Top, I said, Sedona is famous for its red rocks, but a lighter colored layer overtops the rusty red sandstone. You'll see the connection later in this series.
Here you go! Here's the connection between the light layers and the red stuff.
The red rocks have a high iron content, and the color is literally caused by that iron having rusted. The iron content in the top layers must not be very high.

I've hiked all around there, but I still think that looks like a chicken!! Loving this series and seeing Sedona again!!
I should visit Sedona soon. I like iron colored rocks...they're so Martian! I love the layers in this, and after reading Marilyn's comment, I have to say that I also see a chicken, as well as a coffeepot, or maybe a chicken's coffeepot. It's hard to say which. This is really fantastic, and I'm sure there's a perfectly logical geological explanation for the layering pattern, but what strikes me is how the limestone colored rock makes me think of icing.

What? No YouTube link to an appropriate piece of 60's music? It looks marvellous. Iron oxide is the colouring agent most frequently used by studio potters. I still have a large sack in the garage..something else to rehome before I pop off!

A chicken? I see the buildings in the forground. They give a marvelous perspective. These things are huge. Love the detail. Good stuff.
There must be a lot of iron in that rock for it to have the rich red color.
I just love these rusty rocks. Wonder if you wipe them down with Rustoleum if they'd shine? Guess it would take a massive amount to try it. And a big arm. Absolutely breathtaking landscape here!
