Description
The Point Bolivar Lighthouse was a beacon for ships sailing the channel between Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula built from 1872 to 1933. It is 117 ft. tall. The lighthouse has a brick core covered by a skin of cast iron plates. Back in the day it was painted with black and white horizontal stripes.
The devastating Galveston Hurricane killed 6,000 people, but the lighthouse saved 125. Ditto for the 1915 hurricane when 61 people took shelter here.
It is now on private property and not open to the public.
BTW: This is a digital pic taken with my new little Lumix camera. I have entered the 21st Century!

I've also got a shot of this. my home town and heart are only a short distance away and Crystal Beach is a place I love to visit when I'm home visiting family. If not for the cost of insurance since Ike, I would love to settle on Bolivar. Did you go over on the Ferry?

Great shot of a different type of lighthouse! I have not heard of one with steel plates outside before, but seems it worked well, so thats good! Great shot, shame they don't restore it though.. :-( Rob

Way to go Roger! So glad to hear you've got a new little Lumix...they're very good. Now you will be able to run with the crowd here:) Tara and I are both lighthouse fans. But I hate to see one no longer open to the public. This one has a heroic past.
Nice shot with some interesting composition factors. I like also the visual information in this from the point of view that I like lighthouses. This is an unusual one.

Great capture and interesting historical information. I was just wondering about the great hurricane that hit Galveston in 1906 (?) when you covered it!
