Description
It's what Mrs L has always wanted on Crystal Beach, Texas - a veritable palace on stilts! This type of beach house can be found all along Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula, and that's what bothers me.
You see from 1980-2010 this area has had two very nasty tropical depression storms, eight tropical storms, and seven hurricanes - including two whoppers. Hurrican Ike hit Bolivar Peninsula head-on and washed away the town of Gilchrist just down the road from Crystal Beach. Mrs. L. is right, the insurance premiums would kill an ordinary person. Of course if you can afford to build a house like this, you probably don't give a hoot about the insurance cost.
OK, I'm being a killjoy. It's fun to think "what if" and I'll bet we would all like a tour of this livin' large home. Hope you get back to Texas soon Mrs. Lubner to see all the changes since 2010.

:-) If the top part survives the high winds and flying debris, it looks like this might stand the time. They have new requirements for building above ground level since it was all under water. But I was thinking more along the lines of a 20 foot tall platform on steel pilings with a trailer bolted to it. Cheaper to replace when the weather gets rough.

Wait a minute....wasn't Mrs. Lubner's husband born without a spine? Regardless, we used to rent a little round house right on the beach a mile or so from the ferry landing; called The Urchin; fresh shrimp on the deck, with that glorious Gulf breeze keeping the skeeters away. Heaven!

Actually I don't really care for this design at all. Looks like it was built with Lego or at least designed by Lego, LOL! Seems to be a jumble of styles and add-ons, along with a bizarre roofline, without having any real character of its own, to me anyway!
It is interesting home, but to me a complete waste of money, since the next big storm will probably destroy it, outstanding capture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well now! Let me put my 50cents worth in.. lol First up, this is case of pure greed and stupidity! KNOWING the whole region and especially the beach area is liable to Hurricanes, flooding, etc etc, why on earth did build it there if not to just grab money! They have trashed the beach.. The view.. The house is effectively worthless, as the next hurricane will flatten most of it! and the insurance will cripple all but those in the millionaire bracket!! Aside from that, it does not fit the area from what I can see, you can stare into the neighbors side widows or onto the land.. And I could go on... Rog? While the pic has nothing wrong with it AND the house has nothing wrong if moved, its a stupid place to build it.. Mrs Lubner would not like I fear lol; Rob (End of drone now! lol)
Uh, guys, this is photo is not to be taken seriously. I was kidding Mrs. Lubner. And as you can see from Mrs Lubner's comment, it isn't what she would want anyway. Personally I like the part of Bolivar Peninsula where there aren't any beach houses, or there are just one or two here and there. I agree with all of you that it seems to be a waste of money and a questionable addition on what once was pristine beachfront. Houses like this are nice to stay in, but there are just too many of them. "Repave paradise and put up a parking lot," or an opulent beach house.
