Description
Now I start a new photographic series that I call Surreal New York. No picture in this series will be out of the box; as such they will all be a celebration of this most unique American city. New York can reek of gritty realism but it is all overlaid on the surreal nature of being arguably the center of American culture. No matter what you may think of New York, it is probably the first place people, the world over, most think of when they think of America.
To be honest I was not as thrilled with New York as I was with London or Istanbul; I did not fall in love with the city within an hour of landing there. Then again I popped out of the subway in the Bronx on a day that was 105 with 100% humidity and had to haul my luggage 20 blocks on a sweltering street littered with garbage. The tough streets of the Bronx were probably not the most welcoming place to get a touristy first impression of New York.
Enough of that for now. New York did not lack for some great photo opportunities and here I celebrate a few of them. As I said, no image in this series will be as shot from camera; all of them will be surreal to varying degrees, often extreme. I will show you urban landscapes, street vendors and cafes and museums.
We start with New York proper and an iconic cityscape, shot from a boat looking westward into the heart of New York city proper. The spider legs on the building on the right mark the rebuilding of the new World Trade Center. I saw Dark Knight last night and I think Batman would be right at home here.
I hope you enjoy this series as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

Very nice postwork on this one Roxy
A very eyecatching beginning to a series. I like the effect you've created here. Well done - looking forward to more from the series.
Excellent effects. It truly adds more surrealism to a surrealistic place. The blue/gray color scheme really works with this, especially with the water. I've been through Harlem and the Bronx. The Bronx is a jungle almost as diverse as the Congo and probably as dangerous. That was very brave to haul luggage 20 blocks in such an area. I live right in between New York and Philly, and have a preference to visiting Philadelphia compared to the sprawling Gotham/New York. Great show and tell.
Great way to start your series on New York... brilliant capture Roxy and great post work.
Very nice effect. Kind of expected the Joker or someone to pop out. LOL. Cities are just not my thing, but at least it was an experience for you that you will now share with us.
Gorgeous work!
Beautiful effect on the photo. I visited New York when I was 13 and really loved it, though it was far cooler being in the fall than it was when you were there. I'm looking forward for more!
FANTASTIC shot! Love the postwork...and NY happens to be one of my all time favorite cities. It's been a few years since I've been there, though...maybe I can live a vicarious vacation through your next series. ;)
Really cool work and tones! Leaves a lovely feel to this and really enhances the already superb atmosphere!
Cool and Beautiful, Roxy-sensei! looks like the city of ice.
Love the surreal view of NewYork here Roxy, and am excited about the series. Can't wait to see more and read your thoughts behind each image.
will be looking forward to them all Roxy, superb pov and fx.
An electrifying image!
Your arrival sounds most unpleasant and looking at that sky, I can only imagine it was sweltering. I never had any desire to go to NYC, nor reason, but this promises to be an interesting series from our first view. Possibly the only place in the US more surreal than NYC is Vegas. Great postwork Roxy and a wonderful pov here!
I like the blue look, gives it a comic feel.
Your postwork seem to fit the vibe of New York, as if you've captured the jiggling, jangling, hyper-caffeinated vibe the city has: it's like you went there and actually photographed the distinct sort of social radiation that is the quintessential American city: it's busy, bold, brassy, and a bit bodacious, and I rather like the fact that I got to use a bit of alliteration too. I love the subtlety of the postwork here. It really brings out the more regular elements of the architecture (regular as in regimented). It's as if you photographed the energy behind the shapes we commonly see and I love the emotional effect.
Excellent
This is beautiful and stunning. The little detail I like is the tallship in the right corner. I like the contrast it makes with the buildings.
absolutely prime.
NY has allot that no where else in the US can offer.. But hang on to your purse or it may dissapoear....Not like it use to be.... Excellant render!
Very creative & bold postwork. I grew up in NYC, love to go back & visit, but would never want to live there again. It is a unique world unto itself with a very unique & vibrant character. I have a few photos from my last visit (last year) that I will post at some time, but right now I'm really looking forward to enjoying your series, Roxy...
Love the surreal look of this one, Roxy! As they say - nice place to visit.... Actually, I'd like to visit NYC sometime, but for now I'll be content to tour it through your wonderful vision.
Excellent postwork on that NY picture
Very nice postwork on this NYC photo, and interesting narrative and commentary on your new series which promises to be worth looking at. I share with you the impression that NY unveils on arriving there. I visited the city twice and on both visits, the first day was an unnerving experience, and yet...I was then totally smitten by Manhattan and still am!
Amazing techniques, well done Roxy
very wonderful shot
